General Description
This position performs various duties as assigned in the operation of the library including providing quality customer service, performing circulation duties and making decisions on how best to assist library users.
Work involves responsibility for a variety of circulation procedures, including charging library materials to patrons, handling overdue fines and fees accurately, maintaining patron records and registering new patrons. This position requires working with patrons in a positive, competent and courteous manner and maintaining patron confidentiality at all times. The work requires that the employee have good knowledge, skill and ability in every phase of library circulation functions.
This position also understands, accepts and actively promotes the vision, mission and goals of Cass County Public Library. Staff members are expected to interact with patrons and fellow employees in a friendly, courteous and respectful manner.
Examples Of Duties
Performs library circulation duties as assigned, according to established procedures, such as checking materials in and out, placing holds, checking collection for holds, overdues, etc. and performing appropriate circulation transactions, as assigned.
Responsible for re-shelving items correctly and shelf-reading as assigned; also empting book drop, basic equipment and copier maintenance, etc.
Offers ILL services to patrons and processes requests within a 24-hour period. Informs patrons when reserve or ILL materials are available to check out. Inform patrons as appropriate concerning all matter related to their account including overdue materials, verifying current information, etc.
Resolves routine circulation problems, summarizing and referring more complex problems to supervisor as needed.
Performs a variety of library clerical tasks, as assigned and maintains orderliness in work area.
May be responsible for patron instruction, including computer and database instruction, creating displays, processing mail, collection maintenance, dusting shelves or other housekeeping duties as needed to maintain a clean, inviting branch.
As a part of closing duties, makes sure branch is ready for business for following day. Communicates with fellow staff, when appropriate about any outstanding issues.
May provide reference service using appropriate reference interview techniques. Refers unanswered questions to branch manager, as appropriate.
May provide reader’s advisory assistance to patrons.
May provide or assist with library programs, including story times, book groups, etc. for children, teens or adults.
Work schedule includes evening and weekend hours, hours are assigned according to service needs of the library system.
Performs related work as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Good working knowledge of basic library methods, techniques and procedures.
Good working knowledge of automated systems as they apply to circulation and patron assistance functions.
Maintains a clear awareness of library policies and procedures and is able to explain these to patrons and fellow staff in a competent and courteous manner.
Good working knowledge of library computers, equipment, library databases and resources and ability to share this knowledge with patrons and fellow staff as needed and when appropriate.
Ability to multi-task with courteous library service to patrons a priority.
Appropriate working knowledge of general patron reading interests, titles and authors.
Maintains and improves library skills and knowledge of the library by attending required training sessions.
Good ability in oral and written communications.
Ability to type 30 words per minute; basic alphabetizing and numerical skills.
Considerable ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
Good ability to maintain library records and carry out library procedures.
Considerable ability to pay attention to detail.
Must have stamina to climb steps, stand, reach, stoop, bend in performing duties.
May be required to lift book crates weighing 25-50 lbs. and/or push book carts weighing approximately 100 lbs.
May deal with individuals who may be disruptive, unruly and/or unstable.
Considerable ability to work cooperatively with superiors, associates and the general public.
Qualifications/Position Requirements
A two-year degree from a recognized college in library technology or a related field plus some library technical experience, OR, an equivalent combination of specific library related workshops and training or related education and experience.
