The overall function of this position is to fabricate objects to augment or repair mobile equipment, bridge structures, marine vessels, and other Department assets by welding, brazing, grinding and cutting various metal components. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times with or without minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service Laws, rules, and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Minimum Qualifications
Two years of experience or training in the welding trade; OR
Completion of a Technical Diploma or Associate of Applied Science welding program from a Louisiana Technical or Community College or equivalent program from other institutions.

Job Duties and Other Information
JOB DUTIES:
Fabricates brackets, racks, cages, braces, grates and other objects from steel and aluminum stock. Uses steel shapes and plates in welding and brazing equipment such as bushhogs, excavation buckets, and other wear components. Cleans and prepares metals to be incorporated into the work.
Takes measurements and prepares sketches necessary to fabricate various objects. Makes recommendations to supervisors concerning material and fabrication options. Determines equipment and supplies needed according to the type of welding job required.
Operates a mobile welding machine to repair broken bridge members, marine vessels, equipment, vehicles, etc. in the field.

Compensation:
Welder: $19.67 hourly
Welder Master: $21.05 hourly
Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Welder or Welder Master. As a part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as a Welder or Welder Master, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant (s). The maximum monthly salary for the Welder Master is $6,566.
