Civil Assistant Project Manager – Chicago, ILPosition SummaryA leading heavy civil construction contractor is seeking a Civil Assistant Project Manager to support the successful delivery of large-scale infrastructure and transportation projects throughout the Chicago area. This role works closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, subcontractors, and field teams to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with contract requirements.The ideal candidate will have experience supporting complex civil construction projects including highways, bridges, transit, rail, utilities, or other public infrastructure work.Key ResponsibilitiesAssist Project Managers with all phases of project execution from preconstruction through closeout.Support project planning, scheduling, procurement, and cost control activities.Coordinate subcontractors, suppliers, engineers, inspectors, and field personnel to maintain project progress.Track project budgets, forecasts, change orders, and production quantities.Prepare and maintain RFIs, submittals, daily reports, meeting minutes, and other project documentation.Monitor compliance with contract specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements.Assist with schedule updates and short-term work planning using CPM scheduling tools.Support field operations by coordinating logistics, materials, equipment, and manpower needs.Participate in owner meetings, progress meetings, and coordination meetings with stakeholders.Review drawings and specifications to identify conflicts, constructability concerns, and scope changes.Assist with project billing, pay applications, and subcontractor invoice review.Help manage project risks and proactively identify solutions to maintain schedule and budget objectives.Ensure all work is performed in accordance with company policies, client expectations, and regulatory requirements.QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.2–5 years of experience in heavy civil construction or infrastructure projects.Experience with DOT, transportation, bridge, rail, or public works projects strongly preferred.Understanding of construction scheduling, budgeting, estimating, and contract administration.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and construction management software such as Primavera P6, Procore, Bluebeam, or HCSS.Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.Ability to work in a fast-paced construction environment and manage multiple priorities.OSHA 30 certification preferred.Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites throughout the Chicago metropolitan area.Preferred ExperienceHeavy highway and bridge constructionRail and transit infrastructureUtility relocation and underground workSelf-perform concrete, earthwork, or structural operationsPublic agency projects involving IDOT, CDOT, CTA, or related agenciesBenefitsCompetitive salary and performance-based incentivesComprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage401(k) with company matchPaid time off and holidaysCareer growth and professional development opportunitiesOpportunity to work on landmark infrastructure projects in the Chicago regionWork EnvironmentThis position requires a combination of office and field work on active construction sites.
