Lead Test & Launch Operations Engineer – Avionics
Overview
In this role you lead avionics testing, launch operations, and mission readiness for Electron and Neutron vehicles at Wallops Island. You will supervise engineers, develop CONOPS, and drive improvements across avionics integration, ground networks, and HMIs. You ensure operational readiness through reviews, simulations, and real-time problem solving during launches. The position offers leadership impact in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment with substantial exposure to high-reliability aerospace systems. You help shape scalable, safe, and efficient launch operations that support Rocket Lab’s broader space missions.

ResponsibilitiesLead a team of engineers responsible for avionics hardware, software, and ground station systemsOperate in Mission Control as console operator for avionics during tests, rehearsals, and launchesDevelop and maintain CONOPS for avionics, flight software, and ground networksCreate and improve test plans, procedures, and checklists for avionics operationsDesign and implement HMIs for monitoring, telemetry, and ground controlLead operational readiness reviews, training simulations, and mission rehearsalsTroubleshoot and analyze data in real-time to resolve avionics and comms anomaliesPerform post-test/launch data analysis to identify trends and improvementsDevelop training programs and qualification matrices for console operatorsLead root-cause analyses and corrective action programs for avionics issuesAdvance Neutron avionics procedures and testing campaignsEnsure overall readiness and capability of the avionics discipline and act as primary technical authority
Key requirementsBachelor's degree in electrical, computer, aerospace, software engineering, or other technical degree5-8+ years of engineering experience with avionics, RF, telemetry, flight software, or launch operationsProficiency with avionics hardware, flight software, and ground station operationsExperience with high-reliability aerospace softwareExperience with RF systems, ground stations, telemetry, or avionics networkingDemonstrated leadership competencies and ability to manage teamsExperience developing operational procedures, test plans, and mission simulationsleadershipconflict resolutioneffective delegationavionics hardwareflight softwareground station operations
