We are on the hunt for a Controller. Our client is a fast growing west coast electrical contractor.Construction ControllerPosition OverviewThe Construction Controller is responsible for leading the financial and accounting operations of a growing construction organization. This role oversees all accounting functions including job cost accounting, cost-to-complete forecasting, WIP reporting, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and financial reporting, while partnering closely with operations and project management to ensure accurate financial visibility across all projects.The Controller serves as a key operational partner to leadership by providing timely financial insights, disciplined cost controls, and strong reporting systems that support profitable project execution and organizational growth.Key ResponsibilitiesConstruction Financial ManagementLead the preparation and oversight of monthly Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and cost-to-complete forecasting across all active projects.Partner with project managers and operations leadership to review project financial performance, margin trends, and risk exposure.Monitor job cost reporting, change order tracking, and project profitability to ensure financial accuracy and early issue detection.Ensure accurate revenue recognition and compliance with construction accounting standards.Accounting & Financial OperationsOversee all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management.Manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.Prepare and deliver financial statements, variance analysis, and operational reports for executive leadership.Develop and maintain internal financial controls and accounting procedures.Project Accounting & Operational SupportWork closely with project teams to maintain accurate job cost structures, budgets, and project forecasts.Ensure accurate billing cycles including progress billing, T&M billing, and collections management.Provide financial oversight for subcontractor payments, lien management, and contract compliance.Systems & Process ManagementLead the management and optimization of construction accounting and ERP systems.Improve financial reporting tools and dashboards to provide greater transparency into project and company performance.Support implementation or upgrades of ERP, project accounting, and financial reporting systems.Leadership & Team ManagementManage and mentor the accounting team including AP, AR, payroll, and project accounting staff.Establish clear processes and accountability across financial operations.Partner with executive leadership on strategic financial planning, budgeting, and operational growth initiatives.QualificationsBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.7–15+ years of accounting experience, with a strong focus in construction or project-based industries.Deep experience with WIP reporting, cost-to-complete forecasting, and job cost accounting.Strong understanding of construction contracts, billing practices, and project financial management.Experience managing accounting teams and overseeing full accounting operations.Proficiency in construction ERP systems (examples: Sage 300/Timberline, Viewpoint Vista, Plexxis, Procore, etc.).Ideal Candidate ProfileThe ideal candidate is a hands-on construction finance leader who understands how to bridge accounting discipline with project operations. This individual brings strong technical accounting skills while also being comfortable partnering with project managers and field leadership to ensure projects are financially successful.
