Founded in 2012 and headquartered in Washington, DC, Virtru develops encryption and data security solutions for enterprise and federal customers.## About the RoleVirtru is seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer to build and maintain scalable backend services using Go (Golang). The role also offers an opportunity to contribute directly to the open-source OpenTDF project and work on challenging problems involving data security, distributed systems, scalability, and enterprise deployments.You will work across complex customer environments, including on-premises, air-gapped, and other specialized infrastructure. The ideal candidate is an experienced backend engineer who can independently own technical projects while contributing to a strong engineering culture through mentoring, design discussions, and code reviews.## Key Responsibilities* Design, build, and maintain core backend platforms and services using Go.* Contribute directly to the open-source OpenTDF project and help shape its future development.* Develop scalable and secure services for enterprise and federal customers.* Solve complex engineering challenges involving data security, distributed systems, and scalability.* Design and develop APIs using technologies such as gRPC and REST.* Work with both microservice and monolithic architectures.* Build solutions for on-premises, air-gapped, and other complex customer environments.* Apply containerization and CI/CD practices to backend development and deployment.* Take ownership of complex technical projects from initial design through deployment.* Mentor engineers through code reviews, pair programming, design discussions, and knowledge sharing.* Create clear technical design documentation.* Promote engineering best practices and a culture of technical excellence.## Required Qualifications* 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend development.* Strong proficiency in Go (Golang).* Experience building production-grade and scalable backend services.* Experience working with microservice and monolithic architectures.* Strong understanding of APIs, including gRPC and REST.* Solid knowledge of distributed systems.* Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.* Understanding of CI/CD principles and modern software delivery practices.* Ability to independently manage complex technical projects from design through deployment.* Strong written and verbal communication skills.* Ability to collaborate effectively with engineering teams and technical stakeholders.## Preferred Qualifications* Deep knowledge of cryptography, including cryptographic primitives, protocols, and secure key management.* Strong understanding of identity federation principles, including OIDC and SAML.* Experience designing or contributing to federated trust systems.* Experience deploying software in complex environments such as on-premises infrastructure, air-gapped environments, or sovereign clouds.* Familiarity with modern API protocols such as ConnectRPC.* Knowledge of container standards and runtimes, including Open Container Initiative (OCI) standards.* Experience developing and maintaining multi-language SDKs.* Contributions to open-source projects, particularly in security or data protection.* Demonstrated experience as an active contributor or maintainer of an established open-source project.## Job Details**Job Title:** Senior Backend Software Engineer**Company:** Virtru**Location:** Washington, DC, US**Work Type:** Remote**Employment Type:** Full-time**Seniority Level:** Mid-Senior Level**Industry:** Software Development**Posted:** August 30, 2026## BenefitsThe role may include benefits such as:* Medical insurance* Vision insurance* 401(k) retirement benefits* Additional employee benefits based on applicable company policies and eligibility## Equal OpportunityVirtru is committed to building an inclusive and collaborative workplace.
