Medical Referral Specialist

Overview The Referral Specialist plays a crucial role in the healthcare system by facilitating patient referrals to specialists and ensuring that all necessary information is processed efficiently. This position requires a detail-oriented individual with a strong understanding of medical terminology and insurance processes. The ideal candidate will work closely with healthcare providers, patients, and insurance companies to ensure seamless communication and coordination of care. Duties - Manage the referral process from initiation to completion, ensuring timely communication with patients and specialists. - Verify insurance coverage and benefits for referrals, including managed care plans. - Maintain accurate medical records and documentation in compliance with HIPAA regulations. - Utilize medical coding knowledge, including ICD-10, to ensure proper coding for referrals. - Collaborate with medical office staff to gather necessary patient information and documentation for referrals. - Respond to inquiries from patients regarding their referral status and assist them in navigating the referral process. - Ensure that all referral-related data is entered into the office systems accurately and promptly. Experience - Previous experience in a medical office setting is preferred, with a focus on insurance verification and managed care processes. - Familiarity with medical terminology, coding practices, and HIPAA regulations is essential. - Experience handling medical records and understanding of the referral process within healthcare systems is highly desirable. - Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are critical for managing multiple referrals simultaneously. - Excellent communication skills are necessary for effective interaction with patients, healthcare providers, and insurance representatives.
