IDPH Water Operator/Sample Collector

Position Summary The Water Operator / Sample Collector is responsible for conducting routine water system monitoring and compliance sampling at Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) regulated non-transient, non-community public water supply facilities, including schools. This position ensures compliance with state and federal drinking water regulations through regular site visits, sample collection, documentation, and coordination with regulatory agencies. Key Responsibilities Conduct monthly site visits to IDPH non-transient, non-community public water supply facilities, including K-12 schools and similar institutions. Collect drinking water samples in accordance with IDPH, IEPA, and EPA sampling protocols (e.g., bacteriological, lead and copper, nitrate/nitrite, and other required parameters). Properly preserve, label, document, and transport samples to certified laboratories within required holding times. Perform basic water system operational checks, including inspection of treatment equipment, distribution components, and sampling points. Maintain accurate records of sampling results, chain-of-custody forms, site visit logs, and compliance documentation. Communicate sampling schedules, findings, and compliance requirements with facility representatives and internal staff. Identify potential compliance issues and report concerns promptly to supervisors and appropriate regulatory agencies. Assist with corrective actions, follow-up sampling, and resampling as required. Maintain calibration and proper use of sampling equipment and field testing instruments. Adhere to all safety procedures, including use of personal protective equipment and safe driving practices. Stay current with changes to IDPH and EPA drinking water regulations and guidance. Required Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. IDPH or IEPA Public Water Supply Operator License (or ability to obtain within six months). Demonstrated knowledge of public water supply regulations, sampling procedures, and compliance requirements. Valid Illinois driver’s license with the ability to travel to multiple facilities monthly. Strong attention to detail and ability to accurately document regulatory data. Ability to work independently, manage schedules, and meet regulatory deadlines. Physical & Work Requirements Ability to lift and carry sampling equipment and coolers. Ability to work in mechanical rooms, basements, and confined spaces. Outdoor work in varying weather conditions as required. Work Schedule Primarily weekday hours with monthly site visits; occasional flexibility may be required to meet sampling deadlines. Estimated 10-20 hours of work per week.
