Software Engineer (Mid-Level, Backend)
Description:
Spatial Front, Inc. (SFI), a two-time USAToday Top Workplaces awardee and Washington Top Workplaces honoree, is seeking a results-driven Backend Software Engineer to support a high-visibility federal program focused on modernizing data-driven processes that evaluate vehicle safety performance. This role supports the development and maintenance of scalable, secure web applications and APIs that power a mission-critical data platform used by government stakeholders and external partners.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative engineer with strong backend development experience, a passion for clean and maintainable code, and comfort working in Agile and DevSecOps environments.
Key Responsibilities
Design and architect backend software applications supporting a modern, data-centric platform
Develop, maintain, and optimize scalable, high-performance applications using Node.js
Build and maintain RESTful APIs and integrate with external data sources
Implement reusable, modular components and support state management strategies
Perform unit and end-to-end testing using tools such as Postman
Participate in peer code reviews, ensuring adherence to coding standards and best practices
Collaborate closely with senior engineers, UI/UX designers, QA teams, and stakeholders in an Agile/Scrum environment
Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical issues
Contribute to technical documentation, including system design, APIs, and workflows
Support CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins and GitHub Actions
Requirements:
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
OR
Six (6) years of equivalent professional experience in place of a degree
Required Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of experience as a backend Software Engineer
Proficiency with Node.js, RESTful APIs, GitHub, AWS, and API Gateway
Experience working in Agile/Scrum and DevSecOps environments
Hands-on experience with Jira and Confluence
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Public Trust clearance (fingerprinting required)
Desired Qualifications
Experience developing APIs using Node.js and Express
Familiarity with AWS services such as S3, Lambda, DynamoDB, and API Gateway
Exposure to Docker and container orchestration tools like Kubernetes
Understanding of application security best practices, including OAuth and JWT
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
Prior experience supporting federal government projects
Additional Information
Clearance: Must be authorized to work in the U.S. and able to obtain a Public Trust clearance.
Background checks may include Criminal History, Education Verification, Employment Verification, Professional Certifications, and Credit History. (Public Trust investigations typically take 4–8 weeks and require fingerprinting.)
Work Environment: Flexible/remote, with occasional on-site support as needed.
Salary Range: $80,000 – $130,000 annually
