Senior BESS Engineer - Battery Technology & Sizing
Hydrogen Group is seeking a Senior BESS Engineer – Battery Technology & Sizing for a 12-month contract opportunity in Juno Beach, FL.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced energy storage engineer to take a key technical role supporting utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. The position combines BESS sizing and system optimization with battery technology evaluation and the development of innovative engineering tools and processes.
The role
As a Senior BESS Engineer, you will serve as a technical specialist in utility-scale battery energy storage, supporting project-specific sizing decisions while evaluating existing and emerging storage technologies.
You will apply strong engineering fundamentals to optimize BESS solutions against technical, operational and commercial requirements while helping improve the tools and methodologies used throughout the engineering lifecycle.
Key responsibilities include:
Provide technical expertise for utility-scale BESS sizing, methodology, assumptions and optimization
Develop and optimize end-to-end BESS sizing from the point of interconnection through substations, transformers, PCS/inverters, DC systems and batteries
Account for system losses, battery degradation, augmentation and overbuild strategies, temperature effects and operating constraints
Incorporate project-specific technical and contractual requirements into sizing calculations
Develop, maintain and continuously improve BESS sizing methodologies, calculators and technical guidance
Maintain accurate records of sizing assumptions, inputs, technical decisions and results
Review project-specific sizing results and identify optimization opportunities and technical risks
Maintain BESS and PCS equipment data used within engineering sizing tools
Evaluate existing and emerging battery and energy storage technologies
Assess battery performance characteristics including degradation, efficiency, available energy, reliability, state of charge and state of health
Evaluate emerging and alternative energy storage technologies for technical maturity, performance, safety, scalability and commercial viability
Develop preliminary system sizing and cost estimates to support technology evaluations
Analyze technical data and communicate findings and recommendations to engineering and project stakeholders
Develop and improve tools to automate BESS sizing, performance forecasting, technical evaluations and repetitive engineering workflows
Apply data analytics, programming, automation and AI-enabled approaches where they can improve engineering quality, consistency and efficiency
Collaborate with technical and software teams to translate engineering methodologies into scalable digital tools
What we're looking for
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering or a related discipline
Strong utility-scale BESS engineering experience
Demonstrated knowledge of BESS sizing and system optimization
Understanding of AC and DC sizing methodologies
Knowledge of battery degradation, system losses, augmentation/overbuild strategies and thermal impacts
Understanding of PCS/inverters and associated power electronics
Experience assessing battery performance and energy storage technologies
Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
Ability to translate complex engineering requirements into practical technical solutions
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering and project teams
Strong organizational and technical documentation skills
Desirable experience
Alternative or emerging battery chemistries and long-duration energy storage technologies
Flow batteries, sodium-ion batteries, multi-day storage, supercapacitors or other alternative storage technologies
IGBT or SiC inverter technology
Battery and/or PCS technology evaluation
Engineering automation and digital tool development
Python, Excel/VBA, Power BI or similar analytical tools
Applying AI or advanced data analytics to engineering applications
Battery performance forecasting
Experience engaging with battery or PCS manufacturers and technology providers
Some travel to manufacturing facilities may be required to support technology assessments.

Location: Juno Beach, FL – Hybrid
Contract: 12 months
Pay rate: Up to $52.96 per hour
