Overview
The Pediatric Hospitalist will provide inpatient care for a diverse pediatric population at Benefis Hospital. The role includes 24‑hour inpatient shifts on a 7 on/7 off rotation, pediatric rounds, newborn rounds, and responding to the emergency department for pediatric patients.
Responsibilities
182 shifts per year (full‑time)
7 on/7 off schedule with home call during 24‑hour shifts
Work alongside a pediatric inpatient team of 2 physicians and 2 nurse practitioners
Alternate first call every other day/night for work‑life balance
Provide inpatient rounds, newborn rounds, and respond to ED pediatric cases
Assist with short‑term ventilator management post‑operative when needed
Offer care ranging from observation to acute PICU level care
Unit Details
14‑room, 16‑bed unit serving newborns to 17‑year‑olds
Population includes general pediatric diagnoses, surgical, respiratory, psychiatric, NAS, chronic conditions, some PICU, DKA, complex cardiac, and trauma patients
Average daily census: ~6 patients, higher in flu season
Colorful, kid‑friendly rooms with family areas
All pediatric staff PALS and ENPC trained
EPIC EMR with remote and HAIKU/Canto access
Birth Center/NICU averages 2‑5 deliveries/day, including high‑risk cases
Newborn daily census: 3‑8 patients
Pediatric and NICU Mercy Flight transfer teams available
Level III NICU staffed with neonatologists and neonatal nurse practitioners
Collaborative relationship with NICU providers, surgeons, endocrinology, cardiology, ED, and outpatient pediatric partners
Academic Opportunities
