Tax Senior Manager, State and Local Tax - Sales & Use TaxA Tax Senior Manager, State and Local Tax - Sales & Use Tax is responsible for advising clients of the sales & use tax implications relating to their business objectives, recommending alternate courses of action, as well as identifying different methods of complying with sales & use tax statutes and regulations. In this role, the SALT Sales & Use Tax Senior Manager will be charged with marketing, networking and business development within his/her area of experience and specialization and recognizing potential changes in sales & use tax policy and applying new policies to tax compliance. In addition, the SALT Sales & Use Tax Senior Manager will work with the National Sales and Use Tax team, Tax Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide sales & use tax expertise to their clients.Job Duties:ResearchIdentifies complex sales & use tax situations when research is necessary providing an outline of the issue(s) and the appropriate source of research to be conductedAnalyzes researched facts and the sources utilized prior to composing a detailed report or preparing a taxability matrix of the research findingsDevelops relationships with in-state and out of state Department of Tax (DOT)/Department of Revenue (DOR) personnelTax ComplianceConducts detailed reviews of sales & use tax returns with the ability to identify most significant sales & use tax issuesEvaluate company's current compliance processes and provide customized and automated solutions for companies to report their sales & use tax obligationsTax ConsultingDrafts tax memorandums, tax opinions and other documentation on various sales & use tax issuesConduct review of client operations to determine states where sales & use tax return should be filedReview client records to determine if proper resale and exemption certificates are maintained and develop procedures for retaining proper resale and exemption certificatesApplies all applicable state tax consulting sub-specialties and confers with other professionals when appropriateEnsures tax engagement letters are adopted prior to engagement work commencing and manages engagementsAssists in the development of consultative sales & use tax strategiesManages the expectations of assigned clientsTax ControversyDrafts responses to notices from state taxing authoritiesRepresents clients before any tax authority on contested sales & use tax issuesProvides assistance with exam supportTax Related SoftwareUtilizes sales & use tax research databases and other sales & use tax-related software in the completion of assigned tasksTax SpecializationProvides technical client service to multi-state companies with sales & use tax issuesConducts negotiation of settlements and voluntary disclosure agreements on sales and use tax mattersDrafts technical memoranda regarding sales & use tax issuesASC 450/FAS 5Understands and applies industry standards, along with firm policies and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements as they relate to ASC 450/FAS 5 for sales & use tax contingenciesStrategy DevelopmentReviews studies of sales & use tax implications to identify alternative courses of actions to benefits clientsDevelops new or improved ideas to advance the position of clients through reduction in sales & use taxes or expenses or offering of non-tax benefitsAssist with researching potential sales & use tax strategiesSuggests marketing approaches for new client acquisitionOther duties as requiredSupervisory Responsibilities:Supervises the day-to-day workload of SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates on assigned engagements and reviews work productEnsures SALT Managers, Senior Associates, Associates and Interns are trained on all relevant tax softwareEvaluates the performance of SALT Managers, Senior Associates and Associates and assists in the development of goals and objectives to enhance professional developmentDelivers periodic performance feedback and completes performance evaluations for SALT Managers, Senior Associates, Associates and InternsActs as Career Advisor to SALT Managers, Senior Associates, and Associates, as appropriateOther duties as requiredQualifications, Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesEducation:Bachelors degree in Accounting or other relevant field requiredMasters degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. preferredExperience:Eight+ years of prior experience in state and local/multistate experience requiredPrior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis requiredPrior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions preferredSignificant business development and marketing of sales and use tax engagements experience requiredLicense/Certifications:CPA certification or other relevant certification preferredSoftware:Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word preferredExposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools potential sales & use tax issuesIndividual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.National Range: $99,750 - $262,500 Maryland Range: $99,750 - $262,500 NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $99,750 - $262,500 Washington DC Range: $99,750 - $262,500
