Specific Responsibilities
This will implement and maintain a comprehensive project and/or corporate-wide safety program to ensure security and safety of all employees, while maintaining compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations. The following responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this position. Lead safety performance across tunneling and underground projects in alignment with company program and owner requirements
Support compliance with OSHA, Cal OSHA, and owner driven safety provisions including underground construction, air quality, confined space, and access requirements
Maintain a strong field presence, working directly with crews, foremen, and superintendents daily
Drive pre task planning through JHA and daily work plans so hazards are addressed before work begins
Identify trends in the field and develop targeted training aligned with upcoming work and site conditions
Lead toolbox meetings, underground safety training, and task specific instruction
Support safe execution of shafts, tunneling operations, material handling, ventilation, and access systems
Lead incident investigations, reporting, and corrective actions
Coordinate across multiple projects to share lessons learned and improve consistency
What we are looking for
Strong field leadership, comfortable walking active jobs daily and engaging crews directly
Experience in heavy civil, tunneling, shaft construction, or underground work preferred
Ability to apply safety to how the work is planned, sequenced, and executed, not just enforce compliance
Working knowledge of OSHA and Cal OSHA requirements
Practical, solutions focused approach that supports production while maintaining safe operations
Qualifications
5 to 10 years of safety experience in heavy civil construction, preference for tunneling or underground work
OSHA 30 Hour Construction minimum
Current First Aid and CPR certification
Competent Person designations relevant to scope including excavation, confined space, fall protection
Cal OSHA trenching and excavation competent person training
Confined space training compliant with Cal OSHA requirements
Experience working under Cal OSHA Tunnel Safety Orders preferred
Ability to support Injury and Illness Prevention Program implementation and documentation
Underground ventilation and air monitoring
Gas detection and hazardous atmosphere controls
Shaft construction and hoisting operations
Slurry or EPB tunneling operations
Lockout Tagout in underground environments
Emergency response planning for underground work
Technical Knowledge
· Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices
· Experience in writing reports and policies for health and safety
· Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to present and explain health and safety topics and talk in front of large groups to provide effective training.
· Familiarity with conducting data analysis and reporting statistics
· Proficient in MS Office; working knowledge of safety management information systems is a plus.
· Outstanding organizational skills
· Diligent, with great attention to detail
Physical Demands
Ability to stand or walk for long periods; use arms and hands to reach for, handle and manipulate objects; lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Climb up and down ladder, scaffolds, and other objects. Stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Ability to see well and distinguish between back up alarms, voices, and other normal sounds consistent with construction job sites.

Pay: $135,000.00 - $185,000.00 per year
