Job Title: AWS Cloud Infrastructure Engineer
Location: Columbia, MD – Hybrid (onsite 2-3X per month)
Type: 12+ months contract with strong potential for permanent conversion
Interview process: MS Teams followed by onsite in-person interview (this is REQUIRED)
OVERVIEW/PURPOSE:
The AWS Cloud Infrastructure Engineer will be responsible for the management, maintenance, optimization, and future design of a large-scale AWS cloud environment. This role is hands-on and infrastructure-focused, supporting production systems while also helping design and improve future cloud architecture.
The engineer will work closely with Network Engineers and other cross-functional teams to ensure high availability, performance, security, and cost efficiency of AWS-based systems. A major focus of this role is optimizing the AWS environment to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs, while maintaining stability and reliability.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage, maintain, and support production AWS cloud infrastructure in a hybrid environment
Design and contribute to future AWS cloud architecture, including improvements to scalability, availability, and cost efficiency
Perform system installation, configuration, tuning, upgrades, and troubleshooting across cloud infrastructure
Support disaster recovery strategies, backup processes, and AWS recovery procedures
Monitor system health, performance, and availability using Dynatrace (Datadog or Prometheus acceptable)
Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve infrastructure incidents; perform root cause analysis
Optimize AWS environments with a strong focus on cost reduction and operational efficiency
Support infrastructure automation and infrastructure-as-code initiatives (goal is to provision infrastructure with code)
Work closely with Network Engineers on DNS, routing, load balancing, and connectivity to internal and external systems
Support and integrate services involving:
IBM MQ
SFTP / FTP / file transfer protocols
APIs and REST-based web service calls (consuming/integrating, not developing from scratch)
Manage and support:
EC2 / VM instances
Load balancers
Identity and Access Management (IAM)
Data storage solutions
Networking components including VPCs, subnets, routing, static IPs, and availability zones
Participate in system evaluations, testing, and validation, including end-user reviews
Research and recommend new tools, services, and technologies to improve infrastructure performance and reliability
Maintain documentation and best practices for cloud infrastructure and operational procedures
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (MUST HAVE)
5–7 years of overall IT Infrastructure experience
4+ years of hands-on AWS Cloud experience in implementation and production environments
Strong hands-on experience managing AWS infrastructure, including:
EC2 / VM instances
VPCs, subnets, availability zones
Load balancing
IAM
AWS recovery and disaster recovery procedures
Solid understanding of cloud computing principles and AWS architecture
Strong background in infrastructure management and monitoring
Experience with Dynatrace (Datadog or Prometheus acceptable)
Strong understanding of network architecture, including:
DNS
Network routing
Static IPs
Load balancers
Connectivity to APIs and external systems
Experience working with:
IBM MQ
SFTP / FTP / file transfer protocols
REST APIs (integration and consumption, not API development)
Experience supporting Linux-heavy environments (approx. 90% Linux / 10% Windows)
Proven experience working in cross-functional teams and collaborating with engineers and stakeholders
Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
PREFERRED / NICE TO HAVE
AWS Certifications (Cloud Practitioner, Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer, etc.) – strongly preferred
Healthcare industry experience
Scripting experience (Bash, Python, or similar)
Experience with infrastructure automation tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, or similar)
