Head GrowerJob OverviewSolid Roots is seeking an experienced Head Grower to lead all plant production operations across our greenhouse and field systems. This role is responsible for planning, executing, and continuously improving how we grow plants for use in Solid Roots gardens, contract growing projects, and seasonal dahlia tuber sales.This is a production focused nursery, not a retail garden center. The Head Grower will own growing schedules, systems, ordering, and team leadership, with a strong emphasis on prevention, consistency, and plant health.This is a hands-on leadership role that includes working alongside the team during key propagation, planting, and harvest periods.Duties & ResponsibilitiesPlan and manage the full growing schedule, including seed starting, propagation, greenhouse production, and field growing.Oversee all plant, seed, tuber, and supply ordering to ensure accurate quantities, timing, and inventory flow.Lead and supervise the nursery team by providing training, guidance, and clear expectations.Develop, implement, and maintain systems and processes to prevent errors, reduce losses, and improve efficiency.Monitor plant health across all growing environments and proactively manage pests, diseases, and cultural issues.Manage greenhouse operations including climate control, irrigation systems, and dosatron fertilization.Oversee outdoor and field growing operations, including the use of tractor equipment as needed.Write, maintain, and update standard operating procedures related to growing, propagation, inventory, and workflows.Manage dahlia tuber production, inventory tracking, storage, and sales coordination.Coordinate contract growing and client specific growing needs with internal teams.Maintain accurate records of inventory, germination rates, crop performance, and production timelines.Monitor nursery related budgets for plants, supplies, equipment, and labor.Ensure compliance with safety standards and best practices related to nursery and greenhouse operations.Provide regular updates on growing progress, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.RequirementsProven experience in plant production, nursery operations, greenhouse growing, or a similar leadership role.Strong knowledge of propagation, greenhouse systems, field growing, and integrated pest management.Experience with irrigation systems and fertigation, including dosatron or similar systems.Comfortable operating or overseeing the use of tractor and nursery equipment.Strong organizational and problem solving skills, with an emphasis on systems and planning.Ability to lead, train, and motivate a growing team.Proficiency with spreadsheets or nursery tracking tools.Ability to perform physical work as part of a hands-on leadership role.Valid driver’s license.Degree or certification in horticulture, agriculture, or a related field preferred.Compensation & Benefits$25.00 – $35.00 per hour, based on experience.Paid time off (PTO).Sick time.Paid holidays.End of season bonus.Year round, full time position.Join Our TeamIf you’re passionate about plant production and ready to take ownership of a complex and growing nursery operation, we’d love to hear from you.
