Anticipated VacancySubstitute Teaching AssistantLOCATION: Salt Point Center (Kindergarten through Grade 8)Distinguishing Features Of The ClassThe Substitute Teaching Assistant ensures a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment while maintaining classroom expectations consistent with program standards. This work involves responsibility for the performance of routine classroom duties by providing instructional and support services directly to students. Duties include performance of functions such as managing records and materials, leading small groups in exercises, reteaching/reinforcing concepts to individuals or groups, catching students up with the class after absences, assisting students with social adjustment to the school setting, monitoring students, distributing and collecting papers. Specific tasks will vary depending on the grade level to which an incumbent is assigned. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a teacher or the principal. Supervision of others is not a function of the position.Typical Work ActivitiesThe following is indicative of the level and types of activities performed by incumbents in this title. Perform substitute teaching assistant duties Follow lesson plans and instructional materials provided by the teacher Working with individual students or small groups of students while the teacher is engaged in working with other students Helps teacher to set up classroom by distributing and/or gathering materials and setting up equipment Assists teacher by keeping simple records such as recording attendance, grades, instructional progress, completion of homework assignments, incidents, etc. Assists teacher in routine classroom preparation duties, such as making student folders, making charts, schedules, posters and bulletin boards Makes photocopies of materials for classes and lessons Maintain a safe, orderly, and respectful classroom environment Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, and assigned areas Implement behavioral and safety procedures consistent with program guidelines Provides a good example to students as in the areas of cleanliness and proper manners Support students with diverse academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs Assists teachers by helping students to stay focused, pay attention and participate by reminding students to listen when the teacher is giving directions Assists in routine classroom housekeeping chores Assists teachers in helping students prepare for dismissal by helping students gather belongings Escorts students to and from buses, classrooms, bathroom and lunchroom Communicate relevant classroom information to the teacher or supervising administrator(s) Collaborate with Teacher, Teacher Aides and support staff Maintain confidentiality of student and program information Uphold professional conduct consistent with agency policies and code of conduct May assist teacher in proctoring tests May assist teachers and students in selecting materials in the library May assist teachers and students in computer operation May write down homework and take class notes for studentsFull Performance Knowledge, Skills, And AbilitiesWorking knowledge of classroom routine;Ability to establish good relationships with students and coworkers;Ability to communicate effectively;Ability to establish and maintain discipline;Tact, courtesy, dependability; initiative and resourcefulness;Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.Minimum QualificationsGraduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.NOTE: Work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis in lieu of a high school diploma up to a maximum of two (2) years.
