All locations Hartford, United States; New York, United States; San Francisco, United States; Location: Hartford, San Francisco, or New York CityJob DescriptionThe Insure AI Underwriting team is an experienced business unit structuring risk-transfer solutions for corporates and start-up companies utilizing AI as part of their product, services, or processes. In particular, we seek to drive insurance for the uncertainty of machine learning model errors, including GenAI applications. Your focus will be on working with data science teams at corporates and start-ups to assess the quality of the implementation of the machine learning systems and estimate the probability of predictions falling short compared to the actual outcomes or quantify the hallucination rate of GenAI applications. In addition, you will build relationships with leading research institutions in the area of statistics and computer science, contribute to the team's research and academic publications, and you will keep the team up to date with the latest developments in the area of machine learning risk quantification, e.g. model error or hallucinations rate assessments, copyright infringement by GenAI models, and AI discrimination risk. We are looking for a Research Scientist who combines a strong background in statistics or computer science with a business oriented mindset to develop financial solutions for AI risk and who will help us shape Munich Re's future. The position can be based either in the Bay Area, or in New York City or Hartford, CT.Education and ExperiencePhD degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science or related fieldsMinimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a data scientist role with start-up companies or as part of a graduate degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science or related fieldsKnowledge and SkillsExcellent understanding of modern machine learning and GenAI techniques, best practices in their implementation at scale and performance evaluationExcellent understanding of conformal prediction and other distribution-free uncertainty quantification approaches and their limitationsExcellent networking and stakeholder management skillsExcellent abstract reasoning and communication skillsAbility to reduce complexity and communicate concisely the most important points of a deal opportunity to senior managementExcellent project management skillsStrong negotiation skillsStrong ability to quickly understand new and complex business casesGood working proficiency in Python, or comparable programming languagesFluency in English is a must, fluency in German a plusHighly ambitious, entrepreneurial, and innovative mindset, curiosity and driveDidactic and intercultural competenceWillingness to work in deal teams distributed across different time zones and continentsWillingness to travelAt The Hartford Steam Boiler, a subsidiary of Munich Re, we see Diversity and Inclusion as a solution to the challenges and opportunities all around us. The salary ranged posted below applies to the Company's Hartford, CT location.The salary range for this position is $ 138,400 - $203,000, plus opportunity for company bonus. In addition, the company provides a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, an employee wellness program, life and disability insurance, a retirement savings plan, paid holidays and paid time off (PTO).The salary estimate displayed represents the typical salary range of candidates hired. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role.
