American Sign Language Teacher

The American Sign Language Teacher is responsible for planning, organizing and implementing an appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides and encourages student to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Work is performed under the supervision of the principal. Compensation is determined by higher education units and previous experience. This position works during the faculty school year from early August through late May.ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIESActively support the Catholic, Holy Cross mission of the school in the classroom and throughout school programsPlan, prepare, and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning and are in accordance with school standardsEstablish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activitiesProvide a variety of instructional strategies and resources to address student learnersObserve and evaluate student performance and developmentUse relevant technology to support and differentiate instructionEncourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategiesAssign and grade class work, homework, tests, and assignmentsProvide appropriate feedback on student work in a timely mannerMaintain accurate and complete records of student progress and developmentCollaborate with colleagues in developing common curriculum and assessmentsWilling to work outside the normal schedule periodically in collaboration with colleaguesMaintain discipline in accordance with the riles and disciplinary systems of the schoolPrepare required reports on student and activitiesParticipate in department, school, and parent meetingsCommunicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues, administrators, and parents regarding student progress and student needsCommunicate with colleagues, students, and parents in a manner commensurate with the relationshipReturn all emails and voicemails within 24 hoursDemonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic, and ability backgroundsParticipate in appropriate professional activitiesParticipate in extracurricular activities such as social services, sporting activities, clubs, and student organization as directedFulfill supervisory and substitution obligationsOther duties as assignedEXPERIENCEStudent teaching or the equivalent requiredTwo-five years classroom experience preferredEDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSBachelor's degree in subject area from an accredited subject area or corresponding certification from another stateTeachers without certification but with related field teaching will be consideredSKILLSAbility to communicate effectively orally and in writingProven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basisKnowledge and implementation of relevant technology for classroom instruction and student learningAbility to work collaborativelyMeet professional teacher education requirements of school, diocese and stateBEHAVIORAL JOB ATTRIBUTESMust support the Catholic, Holy Cross mission and philosophy of the schoolExercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate actionSelf-starter who is driven to learn and constantly seeks ways to improve professional skills, modernize internal systems and implement best practicesTeam-player who is willing to collaborate and support colleagues when neededAbility to work with enthusiasm and pride as a members of the greater Saint Francis, Holy Cross CommunityAct as a role model to students and peers, always imparting good citizenship, kindness, friendliness, and helpfulness in a Christian wayShow respect and service orientation towards all members of the immediate and extended communitiesPositive attitude: optimistic, flexible, and passionate about helping all students reach their potentialPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSMust be able to operate a keyboard and mouseWork requires visual acuityWork requires hand dexterityMust be able to focus on highly detailed tasks for long periods of timeMust be able to physically navigate a classroom and campusMust be able to lift 25 lbsThe above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.
