About The JobThe Red Hat Linux Virtualization Networking team is seeking an Associate Software Engineer with a deep passion for system-level engineering and low-level operating system components. The RHEL Virtualization group is responsible for all aspects related to Virtualization in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, including system, firmware, device and network emulation, as well as their counterpart aspects in the guest instance on top of Red Hat or third-party virtualized platforms. In this role, you will design, implement, test, and automate deployment tools and solutions, contributing to industry-leading technologies like Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization and community distributions such as CentOS Stream and Fedora. As part of a geographically distributed team, you will collaborate with multiple Red Hat engineering teams and open-source communities around the globe. This position offers an excellent opportunity to work alongside and learn from some of the brightest engineers in the open-source industry.What You Will DoDesign and develop code to implement new features and resolve defects primarily in open-source community projects related to virtualization and networking technologiesActively contribute to and collaborate with teams enabling new features in Red Hat layered products across virtualization and container solutionsEngage actively in the open-source community; review patches and provide technical feedback on community-oriented enhancements and bug fixesDevelop and contribute tests into a continuous integration (CI) workflowWork effectively as part of a distributed, agile teamWhat You Will Bring2+ years of relevant experience in system-level software development for Linux, preferably using C or C++Strong understanding of networking concepts, such as communication layers, protocols, network interfaces and architectures; experience with packet-level debugging and transport protocols such as TCP is a plusTechnical proficiency in the Linux Networking stack, or other low-level subsystemsStrong knowledge of operating systems and computer architecture conceptsStrong system-level debugging skills (e.g., GDB, strace, BPF traces, etc.)Excellent written and verbal communication skills in EnglishBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field; an advanced degree is beneficialConsidered a PlusDevelopment experience with KVM and QEMU and the Linux Virtualization stack,particularly in areas like memory management, IOMMU, device assignment, or other low-level subsystemsFamiliarity with open-source development and active engagement in communities such as the Linux kernel, distributions, or similar projects, ideally with a history of active open source contributionsRust, Python, Go, or shell script programming experience; familiarity with security topics and defensive programming techniquesExperience with Linux drivers development and with the Linux kernel networking subsystemExperience with multiple hardware platforms (e.g., x86, ARM64, s390x, RISC-V)Prior experience speaking at conferences, publishing technical blogs/articles, or holding patentsThe salary range for this position is $76,830.00 - $154,190.00. Actual offer will be based on your qualifications.Pay TransparencyRed Hat determines compensation based on several factors including but not limited to job location, experience, applicable skills and training, external market value, and internal pay equity. Annual salary is one component of Red Hat’s compensation package. This position may also be eligible for bonus, commission, and/or equity.
