Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to oversee all financial and accounting operations for our office supply and office furniture company. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, and supporting strategic decision-making through financial analysis. The ideal candidate brings a mix of operational accounting expertise and business insight, preferably within product-based or distribution environments.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
Oversee the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
Ensure compliance with GAAP and all applicable regulations
Manage the general ledger, account reconciliations, collections and closing processes
Produce timely and accurate management reports and financial analyses
Operational Accounting
Supervise accounting for inventory, cost of goods sold, and warehousing operations
Monitor margins across product lines (office supplies vs. furniture)
Ensure accurate tracking of freight, logistics, and installation costs
Partner with operations and sales teams to improve profitability
Internal Controls & Compliance
Develop and maintain internal control systems to safeguard company assets
Ensure compliance with tax regulations, audits, and reporting requirements
Coordinate external audits and act as the primary liaison with auditors
Budgeting & Forecasting
Lead the annual budgeting process and periodic forecasting
Analyze variances and provide actionable insights to leadership
Support strategic planning and financial modeling initiatives
Team Leadership
Manage and mentor the accounting team
Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement
Evaluate and improve accounting systems, processes, and workflows
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA strongly preferred)
7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership roles
Experience in distribution, retail, manufacturing, or furniture/office products industry preferred
Strong knowledge of inventory accounting and cost accounting principles
Proficiency with ERP systems and advanced Excel skills
Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skill
