Lead Technician
Heavy-Duty Diesel Truck Mechanic Lead TechnicianThe Heavy-Duty Diesel Truck Mechanic Lead Technician is responsible for overseeing daily shop operations, performing advanced diagnostics and repairs on Class 78 trucks and related fleet equipment, and providing leadership to the maintenance team. This role ensures safe, efficient, and high-quality repair workflows while maintaining exceptional uptime for fleet operations.
Key Duties and ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities include but are not limited to:
Lead, mentor, and support a team of technicians in a fast-paced shop environment.
Assign, prioritize, and monitor daily work orders to ensure timely, efficient, and high-quality completion.
Provide on-the-job training, technical guidance, and performance feedback to team members.
Support onboarding of new technicians, including safety training and tool/equipment orientation.
Perform advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repairs on heavy-duty diesel engines, emissions systems, aftertreatment systems, transmissions, drivetrains, suspensions, brakes, electrical systems, and HVAC.
Use diagnostic software such as Cummins Insite, Detroit DiagnosticLink, Bendix ACom, WABCO, Tech Tool, DAVIE4 and OEM platforms.
Conduct DOT inspections and ensure all equipment meets regulatory compliance.
Oversee complex repairs and assist technicians with escalated technical issues.
Maintain safe shop practices and enforce proper use of PPE, lockout/tagout, and standardized procedures.
Ensure shop cleanliness, organization, and efficient layout for workflow.
Monitor inventory levels for parts, fluids, and shop supplies; assist with ordering as needed.
Review and close work orders to ensure accuracy in parts usage, labor time, and documentation.
Assist with scheduling preventive maintenance (PM) intervals to maximize fleet uptime.
Support root-cause analysis for recurring failures and recommend corrective actions.
Communicate repair statuses, equipment needs, and downtime impacts with fleet maintenance leadership and external customers.
Participate in warranty recovery and vendor coordination as needed.
Document all maintenance activities accurately in the fleet management system (e.g., Fleetrock, TMT, or similar).
Monitor technician productivity and job performance.
Ensure compliance with company policies, DOT regulations, and OSHA standards.
Assist in preparing reports related to shop KPIs, equipment conditions, and operational improvements.
Skills and RequirementsRequired:
5+ years of experience as a heavy-duty diesel mechanic (Class 78).
Advanced knowledge of diesel engines, air systems, electrical diagnostics, and aftertreatment systems.
Experience leading a team or acting as a senior/lead technician.
Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills with OEM diagnostic software.
Valid driver's license.
Ability to lift 50+ lbs. and perform physically demanding tasks in a shop environment.
Preferred:
CDL Class A or B.
ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications (T2, T4, T5, T6, T7, or L2).
Experience with fleet maintenance management software.

SalaryHourly Range: $35.00 $45.00 per hour, depending on experience, certifications, and shift assignment.
