About Residential Services
The Residential Services Division consists of a Juvenile Detention Center and two post-adjudicated facilities. The facilities house youth who are awaiting court and youth who are placed into the department's custody by the juvenile courts. The facilities provide direct care and supervision for all youth placed with the department along with providing mental health and behavioral treatment programs.
Position Overview
The Unit Supervisor is a certified Youth Development Coach that manages the housing units in the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department's Residential Facilities. The goal of the Unit Supervisor is to assist in facilitating an environment that encourages and promotes positive change, while providing a safe, secure, and therapeutic environment for the youth placed in the custody of the Juvenile Probation Department.
Duties and Responsibilities
Manage the housing unit operations and directly supervise the Youth Development Coaches of the facility. Ensure adequate staff coverage according to ratios mandated by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
Monitor, coach, and assist staff on departmental interventions and strategies to include point cards, MANDT, TBRI, restorative practices, etc.
Ensure cleanliness, maintenance, and safety of residential housing units.
Ensure departmental policies and procedures are adhered to by staff members while carrying out the daily program schedule. Address policy and procedure violations by coaching and training staff members.
Communicate with visitors, families, volunteers, vendors, and other agencies that conduct business within the facility.
Enter documentation in the departmental electronic database.
Review and generate documents, which includes but is not limited to: incident reports, logs, payroll forms, worker's compensation forms, etc. Must ensure that all documentation is submitted within allotted time frames.
Assist in conducting internal investigations and report findings to the Facility Administrator, Assistant Facility Administrator, Shift Supervisor, and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.

Requirements
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution and
Three (3) years of full-time experience working in casework, counseling, community or group work in a social service, community, corrections, or juvenile agency that deals with offenders or disadvantaged persons.
OR
BS/BA from an accredited college or university and
One (1) year of full-time paid experience working in casework, counseling, community or group work in a social service, community, corrections, or juvenile agency that deals with offenders or disadvantaged persons.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must possess basic computer skills.
Possess acceptable basic spelling, writing and grammar.
Ability to establish working relationships with the public and staff members.
Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information.
Must be able to obtain and maintain an active certification as a Juvenile Supervision Officer (Youth Development Officer) in accordance with TJJD requirements.
Must be 21 years of age.
Licensure
Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License with appropriate liability auto insurance coverage.
Additional Requirements
Upon receiving a conditional job offer, every applicant undergoes a criminal background check and drug screening.
Employees who hold this position are required to possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver's license. Employee must maintain liability insurance in at least the minimum amounts required by law.
Certified copies of transcripts of educational credentials and/or college credits will be required during hiring process.
All applicants are required to present evidence of a tuberculosis (TB) skin test. In the event of a positive test, the applicant will be required to provide additional documentation.
Every employee is subject to random testing for drug and alcohol or if there is a reasonable suspicion to believe that the employee is under the influence of a substance prohibited by this policy while in the course and scope of employment.
If public emergency is declared by county, staff could be assigned to other duties and/or facilities and/or under the supervision of another county department.
Must be at least 21 years old.
This position involves working with challenging youth where use of crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies may be necessary to ensure the safety of both youth and staff.
