Lineman Apprentice
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASSThis is a skilled position assisting in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the electrical transmission and distribution system. Work involves increasingly difficult, skilled tasks approaching the Lineman 1st Class level as the training progresses. The employee works under the supervision of a Lineman 1st Class or T & D Leadperson.This posting will close after the receipt of 125 qualified applicants.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSAssists in placing poles, pulling wire, and supplying equipment to linemen.Climbs poles, installs and removes crossarms, street lights, various equipment, and materials.Keeps vehicles stocked with required parts and materials.Assists in troubleshooting transmission and distribution system problems.Installs and maintains 600-volt circuits unsupervised.Constructs and maintains energized high-voltage equipment and lines while supervised.May be required to participate in and/or facilitate training to support departmental or City initiatives and requirements.May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.Position is designated as Mission Critical.ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:* May be assigned to operate any vehicle or equipment or inspect poles and attachments.QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE)* High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:* Must possess and maintain a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with "nine points or less" and Tanker Trailer endorsements within three months of employment.* Must possess and maintain a valid telephone number.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIESKNOWLEDGE:* Some knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in electrical transmission and distribution system construction and maintenance.* Some knowledge of the principles of electrical theory as applied to a transmission and distribution system.SKILLS:* Skill in using tools, instruments, and equipment related to electrical work.ABILITIES:Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions in English.Ability to read and understand blueprints.Ability and willingness to learn various skilled electrical construction and maintenance tasks.Ability to learn and observe safety practices and procedures relating to work on an energized transmission and distribution system.Ability and willingness to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other city employees, and the general public.Ability to complete the training program leading to the Lineman 1st Class classification.WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:The job requires frequent climbing, walking, or standing, and requires exerting up to 51 pounds of force regularly.The job risks exposure to the following conditions, including but not limited to electrical shock, adverse weather conditions, extreme hot/cold temperatures, confined areas, dust, pollen, traffic, toxic/noxious fumes, extreme noise levels, heights, bright/dim light, and working hours during daylight and night hours.The job requires the ability to work safely in close proximity to energized high-voltage power lines and equipment.The job requires working in confined spaces and at heights above 100 feet.The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, taste, smell, depth perception, and texture perception.This job description outlines the general nature and level of work and is not intended to be an exhaustive list of duties or qualifications. Employees hired prior to that date use annual leave within the calendar year following the year the leave is earned. All employees may carry over up to a maximum of twenty (20) days at the end of the calendar year. Regular part-time employees who work at least twenty (20) hours per week accrue annual leave at the rate of four (4) hours per month.*Sick LeaveSick rate is accrued biweekly based upon years of service and standard hour classification. Employees must have completed one full year of service on or before December 31st of the calendar year enrollment; and have accumulated at least forty (40) hours of sick time (twenty (20) hours for Regular part-time employees). The employees must have been employed by the City for at least twelve (12) months and have at least 1,250 hours of service during the 12-month period before the requested leave. All fees received for such service may be retained by the employee. Employees subpoenaed to any civil or criminal court proceeding, which employee is not personally or monetarily interested, shall be paid as if engaged in regular work activities.Military LeaveAllows for up to 240 hours in any one calendar year for annual military training without loss of pay or benefits for any employee in some type of reserve status for the United States Armed Forces. Others may take up to three (3) months leave of absence available upon approval of the Department Head. Requests for more than ninety (90) days also require Civil Service Board approval for employees in a Civil Service classification.Longevity PayTuition ReimbursementProgram provides employees up to $2,500 per fiscal year (October 1 through September 30) for reimbursement of tuition of approved college, university, vocational, or correspondence classes upon completion with a grade of "C" or better in credit courses only. Full reimbursement is given for courses and fees, upon approval.
