JOB TITLE: Fleet TechnicianDIVISION: Facilities ManagementDEPARTMENT: Fleet MaintenanceREPORTS TO: Fleet ManagerCLASSIFICATION: Non-ExemptPOSITION TYPE: Part-Time/Medical Benefit EligibleJob SummaryThe Saint Louis Zoo is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Fleet Technician to perform preventative maintenance and repairs on a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment. This includes golf carts, utility task vehicles (UTVs), full-size vehicles, diesel-powered vehicles, small engine equipment, heavy equipment, trailers, and specialized machinery. As a key member of the Facilities Management Division, this position plays an essential role in ensuring the functionality and reliability of the Zoo’s transportation and operational equipment while supporting the Zoo’s mission, core values, and three keys.Key ResponsibilitiesVehicle & Equipment Maintenance and Repair:Perform routine maintenance tasks, including:Inspections and diagnostic evaluationsOil changes and filter replacementsTire rotations, alignments, and pressure checksChecking and refilling fluid levels (coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, etc.)Transmission flushes and maintenanceBattery testing, installation, and replacementHeadlight, taillight, and turn signal replacementsDiagnose and repair vehicle components, such as:Spark plugs, ignition systems, and sensorsBrake pads, rotors, calipers, and hydraulic systemsWheel bearings, axles, and suspension componentsFuel systems, hoses, belts, and filtersElectrical and electronic systemsPerform maintenance and repairs on diesel-powered equipment, including troubleshooting fuel injection systems, exhaust treatments, and engine performance issues. Conduct routine diagnostic tests using industry-standard tools and procedures. Inspect vehicles to ensure compliance with Missouri state emissions and safety regulations. Perform preventative maintenance based on manufacturer recommendations and fleet maintenance schedules. Keep detailed records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance through the Zoo’s CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).Fleet & Equipment OperationsOperate, inspect, and assess the performance of various vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to:Vehicles: SUVs, trucks, vans, passenger vehicles, and trailersUtility Vehicles: Golf carts, electric utility vehicles (EUVs), RTVs, and UTVsHeavy Equipment & Machinery: Aerial man lifts, scissor lifts, skid steers, backhoes, front loaders, tractors, and forkliftsSmall Engine & Landscaping Equipment: Chainsaws, hedge trimmers, trimmers, mowers, power brooms, blowers, chippers, cultivators/tillers, and jettersOther Powered Equipment: Generators, pressure washers, compressors, and portable weldersConduct test drives, equipment assessments, and performance evaluations following maintenance or repairs. Transport vehicles and equipment for service or contracted repair as needed.Shop & Safety ComplianceMaintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.Adhere to OSHA safety guidelines and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).Ensure tools, machinery, and equipment are maintained in safe working condition.Follow all Saint Louis Zoo policies and procedures as outlined in the employee handbook.Communicate effectively with the Fleet Manager and other Zoo staff regarding repair needs, maintenance schedules, and fleet availability.Serve as a point of contact for fleet-related issues in the absence of the Fleet Manager.Maintain a working knowledge of evolving automotive industry standards and best practices.QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or trade certification in automotive technology preferred.Proven experience as an automotive mechanic with expertise in vehicle diagnostics, mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems.Ability to obtain an OSHA 10/30-Hour Training certification.Strong attention to detail and commitment to excellence.Good attendance record and strong work ethic.Versatility and flexibility to adapt to changing priorities.Possession of or ability to obtain a Missouri Class E Driver’s License (for Missouri residents).All successful candidates for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check and a drug test. As this is a safety-sensitive role, a negative drug test result is mandatory.
