OTTUMWA COMMUNITY SCHOOLSOttumwa, IowaPOSITION TITLE: Elementary Guidance CounselorREPORTS TO: Building PrincipalPurpose Statement: To provide all students with a comprehensive school counseling program that encourages the highest level of student achievement through their growth in academic, career and social/emotional domains.QUALIFICATIONS:Master's degree in school counselingAppropriate grade level counseling endorsementTeaching experience preferred, but not requiredPERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:Direct student supportProvide short-term solution focused individual counseling services to students based on critical life changes or other situations impeding student success.Provide small group solution focused counseling services to students based on data driven assessments or situations impeding student success.Provide large group/classroom counseling lessons to students that align with the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for student success.Assist students in removing barriers so they are able to participate in school/community activities.Assist new students to successfully transition to school and its procedures.Indirect student supportAbility to design instruction aligned to the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success in large-group, classroom, small group and individual settings.Collaborate with teachers to present school counseling core curriculum lessons.Provide teachers with support/suggestions for effective classroom managementAdvocate for student success at individual education plan meetings, student assistance teams and/or attendance hearings.Protect confidentiality of student records and information according to district, state and federal regulations.Assist the school principal and/or staff to identify and resolve student issues, needs and problems.Facilitates the creation of attendance plans for students with excessive absences working with parents, building principal, and/or community stakeholders.Refer and assist students and families connect with outside agencies and community resources.Makes home visits to families as needed to ensure the safety and well-being of the studentCommunicate with parents and staff to support studentsProgram Planning and school supportMember of the school's (SAT) student assistance teamUtilize, organize, and analyze student data (SAEBRS as an example) and use this data to determine levels of tiered support for studentsCoordinate with community members/organizations to provide services/resources for studentsFacilitate student, parent and teacher meetings to assist the student's academic success and social and emotional well-being.Work with students, parents, teachers, and/or building principal to develop student academic and/or behavioral plansSupport and provide leadership in the implementation of MTSS in the area of social emotional and behavior learning especially in the area of social emotionalPerform other such duties as may be assigned.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Never0%Occasional1-32%Frequent33-66%Constant67% +A.StandingXB.WalkingXC.SittingXD.Bending/StoopingXE.Reaching/Pushing/PullingXF.Climbing/StairsXG.DrivingXH.Lifting (10 lbs.)XI.Carrying (20 feet)XJ.Manual Dexterity TasksTelephoneXComputerXOtherK.Working ConditionsInsideXOutsideXExtremes ofTemperature/HumidityXAll of the above duties and responsibilities are essential job functions subject to reasonable accommodation.
