Civil / Structural Modification Engineer
Location: Brunswick Nuclear Plant – Southport, North Carolina
Schedule: Primarily daytime; flexibility required to support implementation activities outside normal hours as needed

Position Summary
The Civil / Structural Modification Engineer will perform engineering work supporting civil and structural modification projects at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant. This role is part of the site engineering organization and is responsible for leading and supporting design modifications in accordance with nuclear regulatory, safety, and quality requirements. The selected individual will serve as the Lead Technical and/or Responsible Engineer for assigned projects and provide support to other engineering initiatives as required.
Candidates with prior qualification as a Modification Engineer under an INPO-accredited program and familiarity with Consolidated Asset Suite (CAS) for design and work order development are highly desirable. The individual must obtain qualification as a Modification Engineer and Design Verification Engineer prior to working independently.
Key ResponsibilitiesEngineering & Design
Serve as Lead Technical Engineer and/or Responsible Engineer for assigned civil/structural modification projects.
Develop complete design packages, including conceptual designs and technical specifications for bidding purposes.
Perform civil/structural design and analysis for systems and components, including:
Structural systems and components
Mechanical system supports
Pipe support and piping-related structural evaluations
Seismic analysis
Perform pipe stress analysis in support of mechanical system modifications using ADL PIPE and AutoPIPE software.
Evaluate design alternatives and provide technically sound recommendations.
Develop design setpoints and support post-modification testing.
Prepare design revisions and ensure proper turnover of finalized design products.
Project & Implementation Support
Coordinate design activities with vendors, architect/engineers (AEs), designers, and internal stakeholders.
Provide technical support during field implementation and follow work through installation.
Support design implementation activities aligned with site schedules, including off-hours support when required.
Conduct and participate in design package reviews.
Ensure designs comply with regulatory requirements, site standards, and engineering procedures, including 10 CFR 50.59 where applicable.
Engineering Governance & Collaboration
Obtain and maintain required qualifications to act independently as a Responsible Engineer for modifications within Duke Energy.
Demonstrate sound technical judgment and provide guidance to engineering and implementation teams.
Collaborate effectively in a team-based engineering environment.
Support engineering processes related to work order development and design control systems.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering (BSCE) or an equivalent engineering degree with relevant civil/structural experience.
Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience in the nuclear industry, including civil/structural design modification preparation.
Demonstrated experience performing pipe stress analysis using ADL PIPE and/or AutoPIPE.
Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access to a nuclear facility, including:
General Employee Training (GET)
Radiation Worker Training
Security clearance and Fitness for Duty requirements
Strong written and verbal communication skills in a professional engineering environment.
Proven ability to research engineering issues, evaluate alternatives, and develop sound technical recommendations.
Ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Registration/licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE).
Prior civil/structural engineering experience at the Brunswick Nuclear Plant.
Experience applying 10 CFR 50.59 to the design and evaluation of nuclear facility modifications.
Prior qualification as a Modification Engineer under an INPO-accredited program.
Familiarity with Consolidated Asset Suite (CAS) for design and work order development.

Pay: $60.00 - $70.00 per hour
