Position Details Proposed Start Date 09/16/2024 Working Title AY24-25 Adjunct Instructor of Italian Department 221000 - FLL Foreign Languages Position Number D97751-00 Representation AP - AFT, Local 3571 Position Summary Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept The Department of World Languages and Literatures plays a central role in preparing the students of Portland State University to function in the global community. Because we believe that language is central to that ability, we offer instruction in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Modern Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Norwegian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Vietnamese. The Department is committed to teaching for proficiency. All of our language classes are designed to develop functional skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking for eventual use in a broad variety of real-world settings. Position Summary The Italian Language and Literature program is thriving in the Department of World Languages and Literatures at Portland State University. The department currently offers a Minor in Italian that includes 13 courses, serving approximately 70 students per academic year, ranging from Italian Language and Culture to Literature, and Cinema. We invite applicants to join our adjunct instructor pool to teach first- and/or second-year Italian language courses. Duties and Responsibilities: Teach first- and/or second-year Italian according to the needs of the program. Post and keep office hours to be available to students outside of class. AY 24-25 Italian course offerings and schedule: Fall 2024 Italian 101 001 Monday/Wednesday 1840-2030 Italian 101 002 Tuesday/Thursday 1000-1150 Winter 2025 Italian 102 001 Monday/Wednesday 1840-2030 Minimum Qualifications Master’s Degree or equivalent in a related field Two years teaching Italian at the college level Native or near-native fluency in Italian and in English Preferred Qualifications Membership to professional organizations such as AATI, MLA Professional conference attendance and presentations Key Cultural Competencies Creates an environment that acknowledges, encourages and celebrates differences.
