Bellwether is an established IT managed service provider located in the New Orleans area, serving small to medium-sized businesses across the region. We have been providing our clients with leading IT support and strategy for over 40 years. Our employee-centric culture has led to Bellwether being named one of the “Top Workplaces" by the Times-Picayune year in and year out. We are especially proud of this recognition as it is voted on by our employees. This is not a remote opportunity but a job in New Orleans, Louisiana.
What You’ll Do
As a Cybersecurity Engineer at Bellwether, you’ll be a member of the team that runs our Security Operations Center (SOC), focused on protecting clients and our own organization from cyber threats.
You’ll have your hands on all aspects of the cybersecurity process, from designing security architecture to monitoring and testing security measures, to responding to potential threats. You’ll be a go-to resource when the Service Desk or other internal teams need cybersecurity expertise, and they’ll depend on you to keep them apprised of security incidents and evolving threats.
On occasion you’ll accompany the vCISO to client meetings to help communicate in layman’s terms how cybersecurity tactics lead to effective cyber risk management.
What a Typical Day Looks Like
Your workday will include a variety of proactive, reactive and research tasks with lots of interaction with the security team. While you’ll have a good understanding of all of the software in our security stack, you’ll eventually have at least one main monitoring tool that’s your baby. You’ll not only be the master at configuring and optimizing it’s use, but your detailed documentation will share what you know with the team.
There will be hours when you’ll be able to progress through your list of tasks without interruption, but you should be prepared to shift priorities at a moment’s notice when an alert fires, a potential intruder is detected, or a coworker needs assistance to deal with a security issue.
While there will be times when you’re head down digging into the technical weeds and scouring cybersecurity news sites and bulletins, you won’t just be feeding your passion. You’ll be a conduit for cybersecurity information that will enable everyone to conduct business more safely on the internet.
What Ramp Up Looks Like
You’ll start out learning our systems and how a managed IT services company operates. This may feel a bit overwhelming at first, but in time everything will click and you’ll understand why we use all the tools we use and how they come together to create a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy.
Part of your training will be to shadow your coworkers on the security team. You’ll also get to know our clients and their unique IT environments. Your responsibilities will step up as your comfort and familiarity grows until you’re ready to take the ball and run with it, knowing the team has your back.
What Success Looks Like
Success in cybersecurity is measured in progress because attempts to steal, corrupt, hijack and expose data never stop. Progress is when you see an issue through to resolution. It’s when your team finds and plugs a security hole or stops an intruder. Sometimes progress is just being able to check a few tasks off your to-do list.
Because being a communicator is such a big part of this role, success also comes through the effective sharing of information so that the team is enabled, computer users see security as a benefit instead of an inconvenience, and business leaders can make confident decisions about how they’re going to invest in cybersecurity.
What a Good Fit Looks Like
This job would be great for someone who is both a technical wizard and a compassionate warrior for good. You welcome new challenges because they give you the opportunity to feed your hunger for learning. At the same time, you understand that the toughest challenges are not overcome without a team effort. In fact, you might even anticipate becoming friends with many of your teammates because you’re interested in getting to know them both inside and outside of work hours.
What About Advancement?
Bellwether is a growing company and we like to grow people too. We’ll support your professional development with appropriate training and certifications. Whether your aspiration is to lead a team, develop a specialty, or even move to a different area of the company, we have a proven method for helping our people take their careers to where they want to go.
