Mainframe Developer

Job Description: We are seeking a Mainframe Developer applying Google-inspired SRE principles to ensure reliability across hybrid environments spanning Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and IBM mainframe systems running z/OS 2.5. This role suits a mainframe expert looking to combine legacy systems with cloud-native practices and support modernization or migration of workloads to OCI through APIs, data replication, and hybrid architectures. You will treat reliability as a software engineering discipline—automating operations, defining SLOs, reducing toil, and managing incidents—while supporting CA-IDEAL online and COBOL batch applications. Key ResponsibilitiesOwn reliability, performance, availability, and scalability across OCI and IBM mainframe systems.Define and manage SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets for hybrid services.Automate mainframe operations using Python, Go, REXX, and JCL-based tooling.Support incident response, on-call rotation, root-cause analysis, and postmortems.Reduce toil by automating batch jobs, scheduling, monitoring, and maintenance. tasks.Administer z/OS 2.5 environments (JES2/3, SMF, RACF, WLM, performance tuning). Support CA-IDEAL applications, including CICS/IMS integrations and CA Datacom/DB.Manage COBOL batch processing (JCL, VSAM, DB2/IDMS, debugging, optimization). Ensure HA/DR using GDPS, Parallel Sysplex, and OCI-based recovery solutions. Troubleshoot OCI–mainframe integrations via GoldenGate, APIs, and middleware.Drive capacity planning, cost optimization, and performance tuning.Promote SRE practices and mentor teams on reliability engineering in hybrid environments.Must haves:6+ years of experience in Mainframe Operations.Hands-on experience with IBM z/OS 2.5 (or earlier), including IPL, subsystem management, and z/OSMFProven expertise in CA-IDEAL for online application development and support (panels, programs, Datacom navigation)Strong experience in COBOL batch operations, including JCL, utilities (IDCAMS, SORT), and scheduling tools (CA-7, OPC, or equivalent)Proficiency in automation and scripting (Python or Go preferred; REXX, Assembler, or CLIST acceptable)Experience with OCI or other cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) in hybrid or mainframe integration environmentsSolid understanding of distributed systems, networking, and databases (e.g., DB2 on z/OS integrated with cloud databases)Nice to haveBachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experienceExperience integrating mainframes with OCI (e.g., OCI Connect for z/OS, data replication, hybrid cloud architectures)Knowledge of mainframe transaction systems (CICS, IMS) and databases (DB2, Datacom, VSAM) in CA-IDEAL/COBOL environmentsExposure to Google SRE practices (SLOs, error budgets, toil reduction, production engineering)Relevant certifications (IBM z/OS System Programmer, OCI Architect, or equivalent mainframe credentials)Experience in mainframe modernization or migration projects to cloud-native platforms
