Position Type:Classified/Instructional AssistantDate Posted:5/12/2026Location:C F Pope Elementary SchoolDate Available:08/13/2026Closing Date:Until FilledPender County SchoolsOfficial Job Description2026/2027 School YearStart Date 8/13/2026POSITION TITLE: Instructional Assistant Bus Driver Student Behavior/Academic SupportSCHOO LOCATION : C F Pope ElementaryPAY GRADE: Teacher Assistant Salary ScheduleFLSA STATUS: Non-ExemptREPORTS TO: PrincipalWORK WEEK SCHEDULE: Monday - FridayWORK HOURS: Based on School Schedule; occasional evenings and weekendsMONTHS/YR: 10POSITION PURPOSE: Promotes student achievement through prevention and/or response to behavior and assistsstudents with academics to prevent learning loss.MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesAbility to effectively communicate both oral and written between teachers, counselors, and administration, and with parents/familiesKnowledge of school's policies, procedures, and practicesDemonstrates tolerance of culturally and linguistically diverse populationsExcellent interpersonal skillsAbility to multi-task and possess strong organizational skillsAbility to work through behavior issues and motivate studentsAbility to maintain complete and accurate documentation and to develop meaningful reports from the information collectedKnowledge of effective methods of working with children and their developmental stagesWorking knowledge of core subjects at assigned grade levelsFamiliarity with safety regulations, standards for school buses and traffic lawsSkill in maintaining confidentiality and recording data accuratelyAbility to consistently apply recognition, reward and consequencesProficiency with technology to support instructionAbility to operate a school bus and communicate effectively with parents, student and school personnelEDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE• High School Diploma with the ability to pass the Work-Keys Assessments in reading, writing, and mathematics (required).• Associate's degree or 48 semester hours of college credit (preferred).CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS• Valid North Carolina Driver's License.• Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger school bus endorsement and current Driver's Pocket Card.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS• Ability to work flexible hours (evenings, weekends)ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESIntervene with behavior issues, allowing students to deescalate in situations affecting student educational progressCommunicate with students to problem solve and offer alternatives to negative behaviorsUtilize restorative practices to build or strengthen relationshipsDaily check in/check out with identified studentsBuilds relationships and open communication with teachers, counselors, administrators, and families - Explains to parents/families the school's expectations for studentsOrganizes parent meetings as requested by parentsAssist students with assignments missed due to behaviorMaintain accurate case records and documentationDrive a school bus as assigned, ensuring adherence to safety regulations and traffic lawsKeep the bus clean and free of debris to prevent safety hazardsDischarge students at authorized school or bus stop locationsReport all accidents to the Transportation DepartmentAssist the teacher of record by providing individualized and/or group instructionMonitor and keep students on task with assigned workPrepare and distribute instructional materials as directed by the teacherSupervise students in various settings, promoting citizenship, social skills and self-esteemPerform clerical duties, administer routine first aid, and report discipline problems to the teacher and principalWORKING CONDITIONS PHYSICAL DEMANDSMust be able to use a variety of office equipment such as computers and copiersMust be able to frequently lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects up to 10 pounds; occasionally lifting/moving up to 25 poundsDue to the amount of time spent working on the computer, standing and walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for light workAdditional requirements include the ability to climb, stoop, kneel and operate bus WORK ENVIRONMENTMust be able to work in office and public school environments, and come into direct contact with staff and studentsTravel is required to schools and Central Services officesDISCLAIMER: The above statements are intended to describe the general purpose and responsibilities assigned to this position.
