Job Title: Registered NurseReports to: Health Care Coordinator/Campus PrincipalDept. /School: Assigned Campus(s)Wage Status: ExemptPay Grade/Days: Teacher Step/187 DaysDate Revised: 2/18/2020Primary Purpose:To strengthen and facilitate the educational process of students by removing barriers to learning through planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring and evaluating health services in a specific school assignment.Qualifications:Education/Certification:Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education programValid registered nurse (RN) license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of NursingCertified by Texas Department of State Health Services to conduct vision and hearing screeningsCPR/AED certificationSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Responsible for knowing and conforming to all standards of nursing practice as outlined in the Texas Nurse Practice ActPossesses strong assessment skills relating to student physical and emotional healthStrong critical thinking/problem solving skillsStrong organizational and interpersonal skillsProficient computer skills are required to maintain health recordsAbility to communicate effectively, verbally and in writingAbility to implement policies and proceduresExperience:Minimum of two years nursing experience, preferably in community healthPediatric/adolescent experience preferredMajor Responsibilities and Duties-Head Start Specific:Establish and maintain a comprehensive school health program according to nursing standards of practice, district policy and departmental procedures and protocols.Comply with confidentiality requirements as set by HIPAA, FERPA, federal, state and local regulations.Identify, delineate and clarify the nursing role, promote quality of care, pursue continued professional enhancement and demonstrate professional conduct as outlined in the Texas Nurse Practice Act (NPA) rules and regulations. Model behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.Comply with policies, laws and regulations established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Nurse Practice Act, FERPA, HIPAA and Wichita Falls ISD Board policies and regulations.Provide episodic and emergency care for sick and injured students/staff.Appropriately notify a parent of an accident or illness. Use professional judgement to initiate EMS for emergent care when necessary. Notify appropriate district/campus administrator and Health Care Coordinator of EMS calls immediately after situation is resolved.Perform nursing procedures and/or treatments as directed by physician's order and in accordance with district policies and procedures.Develop and implement individualized student health care plans and emergency action plans for students with specific health needs as appropriate.Document all health information according to standards of nursing practice, district policy, and department guidelines and protocols.Comply with and enforce state regulations and district policies and protocols for the security of and the safe administration of medications to students.Follow the established guidelines and district policies and procedures to document health care and maintain complete and accurate documentation of all nursing care and activities within the scope of school nursing.Maintain communicable disease prevention and control measures in accordance with state and local health department regulation, district policy and departmental procedures and protocols.Perform screening procedures as required by Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Education Agency and district policy. Make referrals as necessary.Review and maintain current immunization records for all students.Participate in the assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.Provide for the maintenance and organization of clinic supplies and equipment. Request supplies as needed to maintain clinic inventory.Serve as a health advocate for students and a health liaison between school, physician, parents, and community.Assist students, families and employees to achieve optimal levels of wellness through healthcare referrals, interpretation of medical data, planning and implementing health counseling, health education and provision of a safe and healthy environment.Participate in Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) committee meetings when appropriate. Participate in any campus-based committee when a health care representative is appropriate.Communicate regularly with the Health Care Coordinator (and principal as appropriate) regarding any health services issues or concerns.Report potential health and safety hazards to the principal.Serve as a resource nurse and, when necessary, provides training to LVN in clinic procedures and responsibilities.Monitors and evaluates the provision of health services by the LVN necessary to meet individual student health needs. Report any concerns to the Health Care Coordinator.Provide basic training to campus non-medical staff regarding Food Allergies/Signs & Symptoms of Anaphylaxis and emergency AED use.Mentor registered nurse students.Participates in staff development, faculty meetings, department meetings, and special events as directed by Principal and/or Health Care Coordinator.Demonstrates effective communication through written, verbal, nonverbal and computer usage skills.Is regular in attendance and complies with notification procedures for absencesMaintains positive and cooperative working relationships with colleagues and others in the conduct of district business and demonstrates team work in daily activitiesOther duties as assigned by supervisorExtra duty and after hour assignments as scheduledRegular AttendanceEquipment UsedBasic clinic equipment including thermometer, blood pressure cuff, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, automated external defibrillator (AED), as well as vision screening equipment, and audiometer; standard office equipment including personal computer and copier.Working ConditionsMental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: The skills essential to school nursing include critical thinking abilities and the ability to adapt to varying pressures in times of stress or crisis and in unpredictable situations. Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with constant interruptions. Emotional stability is needed to maintain a therapeutic relationship with students, families and colleagues. Biological exposure to bacteria, communicable diseases and blood borne pathogens are possible. Periodically transport equipment weighing up to 30 lbs.
