Position Title: Ambassador (Parks & Public Spaces)Job Type: Full-time, Evening, weekend and holiday work will be required to support NoMa BID events and operational needs.Supervisor: Ambassador Operations SupervisorPay Rate: $20.55 /hour; or $21.55 / hour if qualified for Driver DutyNoMa BID Overview:The NoMa Business Improvement District (NoMa BID) is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization whose mission is to create a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for residents, workers, and visitors, while driving the development and growth in NoMa. The NoMa BID has been the driving force behind transforming the area from an industrial zone into one of DC's fastest-growing neighborhoods, ensuring that NoMa continues to thrive as a destination for both residents and businesses. The NoMa Parks Foundation, an affiliate of the NoMa BID, furthers this growth by establishing welcoming, sustainable, and beautiful spaces where people can play, refresh, and connect.Position Overview:Ambassadors are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of NoMa’s public spaces, including parks, trails, and activated spaces. Ambassadors work outdoors in all weather conditions and ensure that public spaces are safe, welcoming, and well-maintained. The role requires good communication, teamwork, and a commitment to high standards of public space management.Key Responsibilities:Public Space Maintenance: Maintain cleanliness and order in public spaces, including parks, trails, and activated areas, by collecting and disposing of litter, animal and human waste, and other debris. Ensure all areas are free of graffiti, weeds, and other visual nuisances using appropriate methods, such as chemical applications and removal techniques. Waste Removal: Regularly remove trash and debris from public spaces, including bulky items when necessary. Ensure waste bins are emptied and maintained, and that all public spaces remain clean and inviting. Engagement with Visitors and Residents: Actively engage with visitors and residents, providing directions, information about NoMa events, and assistance as needed. Be a visible presence in the community, offering a friendly and welcoming attitude. This includes respectful interaction with people experiencing homelessness, offering assistance when appropriate and working to ensure public spaces remain safe and welcoming for all. Event Support: Provide assistance for NoMa BID events by helping with setup, breakdown, and overall event cleanliness. Tasks may include moving equipment, collecting trash, and ensuring event spaces remain well-maintained throughout the event. Work Documentation and Reporting: Document all daily tasks, including waste removal, graffiti removal, and infrastructure issues, using the BID’s task management app on the provided work device. Submit reports on completed work and any unresolved issues to the Operations Supervisor or BID management. Ensure all tasks are logged and completed in a timely manner, maintaining high standards of accountability. Infrastructure Reporting: Identify and report issues such as broken sidewalks, malfunctioning streetlights, and damaged signage. Use the Jia app or Microsoft Teams to report these issues promptly to management for resolution. Communication: Maintain clear and timely communication with team members and management through the use of Microsoft Teams, email, text messages, and phone calls. Ensure that any operational or safety concerns are escalated to the appropriate supervisor in a timely manner. Driver Duty: For those that are qualified and there is an organizational need for, ambassadors may perform the trash bag collection and transport to the DC transfer station to dispose of. Must be comfortable and proficient in driving/operating a large truck through busy traffic and narrow streets. Other Duties as Assigned: Perform additional tasks as directed by the Operations Supervisor or BID management to ensure the overall appearance of NoMa’s public spaces is presentable, clean and safe. Qualifications:Education: High School Diploma or GED or two years work experience in a related field required. Experience: Experience in public space maintenance, waste removal, or customer service preferred. Skills: Strong communication skills, ability to work in all weather conditions, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety in public spaces. Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 45 pounds, stand and walk for extended periods, and perform physical tasks outdoors in various weather conditions. Driver Duty Only: License: Possess a valid state driver’s license and pass driver’s background check and training for those performing the driver role. Employment Conditions:Initial 90-day introductory period. Completion of in-house and OSHA safety training. “At will” employment status.
