Summary
Development, implementation and enforcement of health and safety programs intended to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and financial losses. This role also involves conducting safety audits, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation as well as necessary training. The H&S Coordinator will work closely with all Walinga departments including the safety coordinator at our parent company located in Guelph, Canada to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement. Travel may be necessary to our facility in Iowa as well as Canada. This position reports to the Human Resources Manager and must also interact and work effectively with all other departments. The ideal candidate will have 2-3 years of proven occupational health and safety experience in a manufacturing environment that will champion the initiatives. Responsibilities
Develop, review, and implement health and safety policies and procedures in line with current Federal and State legislation.
Ensure that all employees are informed and trained on the latest health and safety practices.
Conduct regular risk assessments and identify potential extent of hazards in the workplace, developing loss-control systems and programs for incorporation into operational policies for the organization.
Recommend corrective actions and preventive measures to mitigate risks.
Monitor the effectiveness of safety measures and adjust as necessary.
Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, and prepare detailed reports.
Recommend correction actions to prevent recurrence.
Maintain records of all incidents and ensure compliance and reporting requirements, including OSHA and MIOSHA
Ensure that all employees have the necessary safety certifications and that these are kept up to date
Liaise with external regulatory bodies such as fire departments and inspectors and required.
Develop and maintain emergency response plans and procedures.
Conduct regular drills and training sessions for preparedness for emergencies.
Liaise with other Walinga Health and Safety staff across Walinga.
Stay updated with industry best practices and changes in legislation.
Coordinate and lead regular company Joint Health & Safety meetings with appropriate staff.
Skill & Knowledge Requirements:
B.S. in Occupational Health & Safety preferred but not required.
OSHA Level 1 – General Industry certification preferred
Two to three years proven track record in occupational health and safety role previously
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently, interface with staff in a professional and courteous manner and make sound decisions.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask and prioritize work.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficient in MS Office and Google Docs with ability to learn new systems.
High degree of attention to detail.
Organizational and problem-solving skills.
Perform multiple duties in a high-energy, fast-paced working environment.
