Executive Director
OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES, AND EXPECTATIONS
As the Executive Director of Wayne County Historical Museum, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the museum's management and operation. This includes budgeting, staffing, fundraising, program development, and the upkeep of the museum's site and facilities. You will work closely with the Board and stakeholders to generate the necessary funds to ensure the museum's success. The ideal candidate for this position should have a proven track record of success as an executive or senior-level professional in non-profit organizations such as museums, science centers, academic or research institutions, or other similar mission-driven organizations. They will be adept at enhancing the museum's capacity to produce programming and events that promote community engagement with Wayne County's rich history while also boosting revenue. Additionally, the successful candidate will possess a strategic mindset, have strong networking skills within the community, and be an effective leader. This critical position reports directly to the Board.
ADMINISTRATIVE, FINANCIAL AND PROGRAMMATIC OVERSIGHT
Advance the Wayne County Historical Museum’s mission of collecting, preserving, and interpreting the rich heritage of Wayne County, Indiana and illustrates the county’s role in American and World Culture.
Guide through the strategic planning process with the assistance of local consultants.
Provide daily budgetary and financial oversight, accountability, and sustainability; manage revenue streams from earned income, philanthropy, and governmental sources.
Work with the Board of Directors to establish policies, activities, and strategic planning initiatives that will lay the foundation for long-term sustainability in programming, financial management, educational activities, collections, and facility management.
Work with the museum curator in overseeing the selection, classification, display and preservation of the museum collection in order to inform, educate and inspire the public.
Cultivate partnerships to support museum programs, new initiatives, and the endowment.
Serve as the primary spokesperson for the WCHM, its mission, and programs.
Hire, supervise, and review and when necessary terminate the staff. Evaluate needs and structure staff accordingly.
Steward an organizational culture that prioritizes collaboration and teamwork in a professional work environment.
FUNDRAISING AND MARKETING
Work with the Board of Directors to create a long-term plan for building the endowment.
Develop & steward a successful fundraising program; actively cultivate and maintain relationships with donors, sponsors, and the community.
Serve as the lead gift solicitor for operations, work closely and in collegial partnership with the Board to cultivate major donors.
Engage in the community, attend local events, and be available on weekends and evenings for museum events.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILL SETS AND EXPERIENCE
BA or equivalent degree preferred, ideally in management or education field.
A minimum of 3 years of senior executive or management experience in nonprofit environments, preferably at a museum, academic, or other similar mission-driven organization.
Proven track record of fundraising, working with donors, foundations, sponsors, and governmental funding sources.
Proficiency with financial management; ability to oversee the annual budget, interpret financial statements, and articulate performance to the Board and other stakeholders.
