JOB TITLE: Beach Lifeguard COMPENSATION: Pay range begins at $15.00 per hourGRADE: Schedule B, Personnel Policies (not benefiteligible) Department: RecreationFLSA: Non-ExemptSUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the direct supervisionof the Recreation Director and Assistant Director and Beach OperationsAdministrator SCHEDULE: 40 hours per week, variable shifts and hours available(seasonal)Statement of Duties: This position is responsible forserving as lifeguard at Duxbury beach, attending training programs to maintaincertification requirements, responding to customer inquiries and providinginformation to the public pertaining to beach lifeguard duties as necessary. Employeeis required to perform all similar or related duties.Supervision Required: Under general supervision ofthe Recreation Director and Assistant Director, the employee is familiar withthe work routine and carries out recurring assignments independently withspecific instruction. The supervisor provides additional, specific instructionfor new, difficult, or unusual assignments, including suggested work methods.The employee is expected to recognize instances which are out of the ordinaryand which do not fall within existing instructions; the employee is thenexpected to seek advice and further instructions. Supervisors review and checkof the employee's work and methods used are technically accurate and thatinstructions are being followed.Supervisory Responsibility: This position does not have anysupervisory responsibilities.Confidentiality: Employee may have access to confidentialinformation in accordance with the State Public Records and HIPAA PatientConfidentiality Laws. Accountability: Consequences of errors, missed deadlines, or poorjudgment may include adverse public relations, monetary loss, legalrepercussions, labor/material costs and danger to public health/safety.Judgment: Numerous standardized practices, procedures, orgeneral instructions govern the work and, in some cases, may require additionalinterpretation. Judgment is needed to locate, select and apply the mostpertinent practice, procedure, regulation or guideline. Complexity: The work consists of a variety of duties whichgenerally follow standardized practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines.The sequence of work and/or the procedures followed vary may according to thenature of the transaction and/or the information involved, or sought, in aparticular situation. Work Environment: The work environment involves everydaydiscomforts typical of an indoor pool facility, with occasional exposure tooutside elements. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, butconditions are generally not unpleasant. Employee may be required to workbeyond normal business hours.Nature and Purpose of Public Contact: Relationships withco-workers and the public involving frequent explanation, discussion orinterpretation of practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines in order torender service, plan or coordinate work efforts, or resolve operating problems.Other regular contacts are with service recipients and employees of outsideorganizations such as vendors doing business with the department. More thanordinary courtesy, tact, and diplomacy may be required to resolve complaints ordeal with hostile, uncooperative or uninformed persons. Occupational Risk: Duties of the job present littlepotential for injury. Theomission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from theposition if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to theposition.Monitors beach and water-relatedactivities closely throughout shift and identifies any safety issues.Directs swimmers out of the water ifnecessary, in hazardous conditions. Maintains a clean environment in andaround the water and surrounding areas. Provides assistance to patrons whenappropriate or necessary. Assists the public, other towndepartments and vendors by furnishing a variety of routine information andassistance and resolving minor problems and complaints.All other related duties as assigned.Recommended Minimum Qualifications:Education and Experience: Knowledge of water safety practices,recreation and leisure activities and ability to relate to youth/adolescentsand their families. Proficient oral and written communication skills. Effectivetime management and customer service skills. Ability to develop effective andconstructive working relationships with adults of all ages,children/adolescents and service providers. Must be physically fit inorder to participate in department-sponsored activities or programs or have anyequivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides therequired knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions ofthe job.Special Requirements: Must be at least 16 years ofage and possess the following certifications: Lifeguard. First Aid, and CPRwith AED. Must have or acquire Water Safety Instructor certification. Must beable to pass a pre-employment physical, drug, CORI/SORI and backgroundscreenings. Knowledge, Abilities and SkillKnowledge: Common policies, practices and procedures ofthe department and office operations; laws and regulations pertinent toposition functions.Abilities: Ability to interact effectively andappropriately with the public and other personnel, perform multiple tasks andmaintain confidential information.Skills: Water safety and recreation, written and oralcommunication skills.Physical and Mental Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of thosethat must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functionsof this job. Work effort principally involves swimming, reaching,standing, lifting, sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods ofstooping, squatting and running.
