Position Type:Classified - Professional/Educational InterpreterDate Posted:3/27/2026Location:District WideDate Available:08/13/2026Closing Date:Until FilledInternal Transfer Deadline: April 1, 2026This is a district wide position and may work at multiple locationsM - F at 6.5 hours/day185 days/yearTITLE: Educational Interpreter (Level 1, 2 or 3 depends on qualifications listed below)QUALIFICATIONS for Level 1 Pay:High school diploma or equivalent requiredSome experience interpreting in an educational setting or working with the deaf community with supporting documentation preferredTemporary license from the Kentucky Board of Interpreters (KBI)Actively working with a mentor to achieve full licensure QUALIFICATIONS for Level II Pay:Temporary license from Kentucky Board of InterpretersActively working with a mentor to achieve full licensureHolds Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree preferably from an Interpreter Training ProgramQUALIFICATIONS for Level III Pay:Full licensure from the Kentucky Board of InterpretersWillingness to serve as a mentor for interpreters without full licensureREPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent, Executive Director, or designeeJOB GOAL: Apply ASL interpreting, English transliterating and/or other communication modalities to facilitate communication in the educational environment and to ensure access to information and maximum learning between students who are hearing impaired and faculty, staff, and other students.DISTINGUISING CHARACTERISTICS: Serve as an integral member of the educational team serving students who are hearing impaired in the educational environment according to the specifications of the student's individualized educational program (IEP). This environment includes the classroom laboratory, field trip, assembly, and other educational sites that are deemed appropriate for student learning.KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:American Sign Language, Signed English, Signed Exact English or other recognized modes of communication with the deaf and hard of hearing communityCorrect English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabularyKentucky Core Content and Program of StudiesApplicable sections of the law, including Kentucky Administrative RegulationsSpecial education, language development of, and effective strategies for educating students with hearing lossValues, behavior, and language of the American Deaf cultureNAD-RID Code of Professional ConductABILITY TO:Interpret from spoken English to the IEP specified modality (ASL, Signed English, etc.) and from the IEP specified modality to spoken EnglishFacilitate communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and faculty, staff, and other studentsImplement knowledge of the field of interpretingRelate well to hearing impaired individualsEstablish and maintain cooperative working relationships with othersProvide instructional staff with relevant information regarding student's functional abilities in the classroomCommunicate effectively orally, in writing, and across the signing continuumWork independently with little directionMaintain current knowledge of school rules, regulations, requirements, and restrictionsPERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:Use recognized interpreting and/or transliterating skills to facilitate communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and faculty, staff,administrators, students, and othersAttend and interpret the educational environment including but not limitedto classrooms, laboratories, field trips, assemblies, meetings, conferences, graduation ceremonies, sports practices, school-sponsored extra-curricular activities, and all other educational opportunities provided to studentsInterpret into spoken English the questions and verbal presentations of deafand hard of hearing studentsAllow deaf and hard of hearing students to communicate with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and othersInterpret at meetings, conferences, appointments, and during othereducational activitiesPrepare for demanding course material as necessary for successfulinterpreting and/or transliteratingPerform other duties as assigned that do not interfere with the community and accessibility of assigned studentsTERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 185 Calendar DaysPay Grade from KCSD Classified Employees Salary Schedule:Level 1 = INTRLevel 2 = INTMLEvel 3 = INTIEVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated by an Assistant Superintendent, Executive Director, or designee.
