Public Works Maintenance Technician IFLSA: Non-ExemptJOB SUMMARYThis position participates in the repair and maintenance of city streets, parks, and public works infrastructure.MAJOR DUTIESPerforms street maintenance duties, including patching potholes and performing other general street maintenance duties.Performs parks and right-of-way maintenance, including mowing, edging, weed eating, fertilizing, and cleaning up litter; maintains recreational and sports fields. Trims trees and shrubbery.Responds to after-hours emergencies, including weather events.Maintains and repairs city lighting systems, including street lighting.Cleans and repairs storm drains.Collects trash and litter from city facilities, parks, rights-of-way, and downtown businesses.Cleans and restocks park restrooms.Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment, including mowers, blowers, etc.Plans and executes event set-up including setting up stages, barricades, etc.; closes roads; cleans-up after events; works after-hours as required.Installs holiday and other seasonal decorations.Performs related duties as assigned.KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION Knowledge of street construction and maintenance principles.Knowledge of stormwater system maintenance principles.Knowledge of work safety principles and practices.Knowledge of grounds maintenance principles.Knowledge of right-of-way maintenance principles.Skill in the use of assigned tools and equipment.Skill in the use of hand and power tools.Skill in the maintenance of assigned tools and equipment.SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The Public Works Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. GUIDELINES Guidelines include safe work policies and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK The work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance and repair of city parks, city streets, and other public works infrastructure. Successful performance contributes to safe and well-maintained infrastructure. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.The work is performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
