In this key leadership role, you will manage a high-performing team of six ASE-certified technicians-professionals who are empowered to make sound decisions and are recognized among the best in the industry. You will oversee the maintenance and repair of the City's Environmental Waste vehicles, ensuring this essential fleet is safe, reliable, and ready for daily service to support Plano residents.Plano Fleet Services operates a state-of-the-art fleet, with the average age of equipment under this position's responsibility at just 4.5 years. The City of Plano fully pays for all required ASE certifications and licenses, providing you with the resources to grow your expertise while leading a modern, well-maintained operation. A Texas operator's license is required prior to the start date, with the ability to obtain and maintain the appropriate Texas CDL (Class A, B, or C) during employment. Join Team Plano!Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, the Heavy Truck Supervisor is responsible for monitoring and directing staff involved in the inspection, repair and maintenance of fleet automotive and construction equipment.This position may be assigned to either a day or night shift. The specific shift hours will be stated in the job posting. Duties and qualifications listed apply to both shift assignments.Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSManagement reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.Supervises assigned staff in the repair and maintenance of the City's fleet; tracks and records technician overtime and paid time off.Utilizes the computerized fleet maintenance management information system.Reviews and schedules daily assignments; reviews and processes work orders; receives dispatch calls for breakdowns.Addresses employee concerns and questions.Coordinates projects with other departments and vendors.Performs quality control inspections of completed repairs.Runs preventative maintenance reports.Tracks invoices received from vendors, reviews them for accuracy, and completes follow-ups as needed.Creates performance appraisals for technicians.Conducts and attends meetings as required.Regular and consistent attendance for assigned work schedule is essential.Marginal Duties:* Performs other duties as assigned.Typical Decisions: The incumbent will establish repair performance measures for employees and evaluate their performance against those standards or measures. Incumbent will review every work order carefully to be sure any errors found are corrected before closing.Minimum Qualifications:Knowledge of: Federal, State and local laws and regulations applicable to vehicle and equipment standards; shop office procedures and equipment; up-to-date methods and practices used in the maintenance and repair of small lawn and garden equipment, as well as light-duty, medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles and construction equipment.Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; following verbal and written instructions; establishing schedules for repairs and maintenance; meeting deadlines; prioritizing tasks and projects; operating a personal computer and using standard office software including word processing; understanding and interpreting fleet equipment and vehicle technical repair manuals; working without direct supervision; maintaining accurate records; applying initiative and sound judgment to quickly find solutions to problems encountered.Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.Experience: Five (5) years of light and/or heavy equipment repair experience with four (4) years automotive and/or heavy equipment shop supervisory experience.Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.Licenses and Certifications: Texas operator's license prior to start date. Applicant may be required to obtain a Texas Class A, Class B, or Class C Commercial Driver's License (CDL) during the course of employment.: Must obtain and maintain in active status a minimum of a Master Medium/Heavy Truck Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications within 18 months of hiring. Additional certifications may be required depending on area of assignment.Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in and around City automotive shop facilities, to operate a motor vehicle; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, and to operate varied hand and power tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance and repairs. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, dust, mechanical, chemical, and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills which may be required.
