Job Description Assistant Controller – Mining & ProcessingAn established mining and mineral processing operation is looking to hire an Assistant Controller to join its finance team.This is a hands-on accounting leadership role for someone who enjoys working close to operations rather than sitting purely within corporate finance. You’ll partner with operational, maintenance, and technical teams while supporting the Controller across financial reporting, cost accounting, controls, project accounting, and continuous improvement.What You’ll Be DoingYou’ll play a key role in the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting while helping the business better understand operational performance.Your responsibilities will include:Supporting monthly and annual financial closePreparing and reviewing journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedulesSupporting financial statements and management reportingEnsuring compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policiesManaging key elements of cost and inventory accountingSupporting inventory valuation across ore, work-in-process, and finished goodsPerforming standard costing and variance analysisTracking production costs across mineral processing operationsPartnering with operations and maintenance teams to identify cost improvement opportunitiesSupporting AP/AR, accruals, fixed assets, and depreciationTracking CAPEX and project spend against budgetStrengthening internal controls, policies, and accounting proceduresSupporting internal and external auditsHelping improve ERP, accounting, and reporting processesProviding guidance and functional oversight to accounting staffActing as a backup to the Controller when requiredThe position has particularly strong exposure to cost accounting, including inventory valuation, variance analysis and production-cost tracking across crushing, milling, flotation, leach and SX/EW processes.What We’re Looking ForYou should bring:Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline5+ years of progressive accounting experienceStrong knowledge of GAAP and financial reportingExperience with cost and inventory accountingStrong Microsoft Excel skillsExperience working with accounting/ERP systemsStrong analytical, organizational, and communication skillsThese are the core required qualifications identified for the position.Highly DesirableWe’d be particularly interested in candidates with:CPA qualification or progress toward CPAMining, manufacturing, mineral processing, or other heavy-industry experienceStandard costing and variance analysis experienceFixed asset and capital project accounting experienceExperience with ERP platforms such as SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or similarInternal controls and audit experienceWorking EnvironmentThis is a full-time position within an active industrial/mining environment. While the role is primarily office-based, you’ll interact regularly with the operational facility and the teams responsible for running it.The successful candidate will initially be expected to work in the office three days per week for the first 90 days, after which other hybrid arrangements may be discussed. Additional hours can occasionally be required around month-end close, audits, and budgeting cycles.Why Consider It?This would suit an accountant who wants more than a traditional financial reporting position.
