IT Senior Fiber Technician

General SummaryThe Senior Fiber Technician is responsible for leading, coordinating, and performing advanced fiber optic installation, testing, maintenance, and repair work for both aerial and underground systems. This position serves as a technical expert in fiber network operations, ensuring optimal performance and reliability across the system. The Senior Fiber Technician provides leadership and training to junior technicians, manages field projects, and ensures all work meets company standards, industry specifications, and safety requirements.Principal Duties and Responsibilities / KnowledgeKnowledge of single-mode and multi-mode fiber systems.Oversees field crews and provide training, mentorship, and technical guidance to junior technicians.Plans, leads, and executes complex fiber installation, splicing, and testing projects with minimal supervision.Leads acceptance testing and quality assurance for new fiber builds or system upgrades.Performs advanced fiber optic troubleshooting using OTDR, light source, and power meter testing equipment.Coordinates with engineering, project management, and construction teams to ensure project accuracy and timelines.Interprets and creates splice documentation, fiber schematics, and network maps.Conducts site surveys and assists in the design and layout of fiber routes and installations.Maintains detailed as-built documentation, test results, and network updates.Identifies, diagnoses, and repairs fiber breaks, signal loss, and connectivity issues.Works safely with various hand tools, power tools, and test instruments.Ensures all work complies with company standards, industry best practices, and safety regulations.Supports network construction crews in pulling cable, setting handholes, and performing terminations.Key AccountabilitiesComplies with all policies, procedures, manuals and confidentiality requirements or obligations, including those inherent in this position, effective and applicable as a result of employment with Rayburn.Timely shares complete information with others including Rayburn management and staff, contractors, and other third parties, as required.Works closely with Rayburn’s IT Teams to ensure seamless integration and efficient operation of network systems and infrastructure.Subject to on call after normal business hours as business needs dictate.Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor or executive management.Acts as a liaison between IT and other business departments.EducationJob Specifications / Skills RequiredHigh school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree or technical certification in telecommunications or related field preferred.Experience4-7 years of experience in fiber optic installation, maintenance, or related telecommunications work.CertificationsAdvanced certification preferred (CFOS/T, CFOS/S, CFOS/O, or equivalent).Skills Advanced fusion and mechanical splicing techniques. Excellent organizational skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills Able to work effectively in a team environment; willing to assist others Ability to think independently and problem solve Evidence of an aptitude for critical thinking Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license Expert understanding of fiber optic theory, single-mode and multi-mode systems, and network design principles. Proficiency in OTDR trace interpretation, loss budgeting, and connector performance evaluation. Proficient with fusion splicing and mechanical splicing techniques. Experience with FTTx, DWDM, CWDM, and passive optical network (PON) technologies. Working knowledge of aerial and underground fiber installation methods. Familiarity with safety procedures, including confined space entry and bucket truck operations. Basic computer literacy for updating records, test results, and reporting.PhysicalDemands Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, or varying weather conditions. Ability to perform repetitive motions in order to use a computer keyboard, test equipment and operate hand tools. Specific vision abilities required include: close vision, distance vision, ability to distinguish between colors, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds; open file cabinets and bend or stand as necessary. May be asked to climb as a part of field related duties.
