BENTON HARBOR AREA SCHOOLSJOB DESCRIPTIONJOB TITLE: Assistant Director of Special EducationSUPERVISOR: Director of Special EducationLOCATION: Central AdministrationJOB SUMMARY: Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Supporting, developing and implementing individual objectives of each student; providing instruction for students consistent with state education code requirements; employing instructional techniques consistent with the needs and capabilities of students; establishing and maintaining an orderly and safe environment; evaluating each student's performance and communicating with parents.JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:In collaboration with the Director of Special Education, determine the vision and goals for the BHAS SPED departmentProvide guidance for compliance with Special Education laws and regulationsProvide SPED training to teachers, administrators and staffAssist with SPED complaintsRepresent the District in SPED meetingsReview and monitor SPED caseloads and deadlinesSupport teachers with writing of IEP'sWork in collaboration with the alignment of curriculum and instruction in the district.Aid and support teachers and staff to implement school-wide positive behavior incentives to reduce the number of students who commit behavioral infractions.Work cooperatively with classroom teachers who have mainstreamed special education students in regular classes, interpret the abilities and disabilities of these students to staff, and assist the student with regular class assignments.Confer frequently with parents and professional staff members regarding the educational, social and personal problems of students.Other duties as assigned MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Master's Degree in Education.Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with appropriate endorsementPossess or is eligible for valid Michigan Administrator's CertificatePossess or qualify to acquire a Special Education Supervisor endorsement.Have at least five (5) years of successful teaching experience.Possess a broad knowledge of curriculum, curriculum development, and best instructional practicesStrong academic preparation and leadership abilityAbility to work effectively with othersOrganizational and interpersonal skillsStrong communication skillsA valid driver's licenseProven ability to meet the challenges of an urban school district PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in;Behavior managementSocio-emotional learningRestorative JusticePositive Behavior Interventions and Supports andTrauma-Informed/Trauma-Sensitive Care KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Commitment to Equity: Passionate about closing the achievement gap and ensuring that every child, regardless of background or circumstance, receives an excellent educationLeadership: Coaches, mentors, and challenges others to excel despite obstacles and challenging situations.Focus on Data-Driven Results: Relentlessly pursues the improvement of central office performance and school leadership, instruction, and operations, and is driven by a desire to produce quantifiable student achievement gains.Innovative Problem-Solving: Approaches work with a sense of possibility and sees challenges as opportunities for creative problem solving; takes the initiative to explore issues and find potential innovative solutions.Adaptability: Excels in constantly changing environments and adapts flexibly in shifting projects or priorities to meet the needs of a dynamic transformation effort; comfortable with ambiguity and non-routine situations.Teamwork: Increases the effectiveness of surrounding teams through collaboration, constant learning, and supporting others; sensitive to diversity in all its forms; respects and is committed to learning from others.Communication and Customer Service Skills: Communicates clearly and compellingly with diverse stakeholders in both oral and written forms; anticipates and responds to customer needs in a high-quality and courteous manner.TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:200-day contract; 40 hours per week$66,650 - $75,250; based on education and experienceSalary based on education and experience pursuant to the Benton Harbor Area School Board policies and collective bargaining agreement for any position that falls under collective bargaining.EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated by the Director of Special EducationPhysical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
