Custodian Job DescriptionMacon County SchoolsPosition SummaryThe Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly school environment that supports student learning and staff effectiveness. This position ensures that school facilities are properly cleaned, maintained, and secured in accordance with Macon County Schools policies and established health and safety standards.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesClean and maintain assigned areas of the school building, including classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, and common areasPerform routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting surfacesClean and sanitize restrooms, replenish supplies, and ensure proper hygiene standardsEmpty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste properlyMaintain floors through buffing, waxing, and other floor care proceduresAssist with minor maintenance tasks, including replacing light bulbs and reporting repair needsSet up and break down spaces for school events, meetings, and activitiesAssist with moving furniture and equipment as neededMonitor building security by locking/unlocking doors and securing the facility as assignedReport safety hazards, damages, or needed repairs to supervisors promptlyMaintain inventory of cleaning supplies and notify supervisors when restocking is neededOperate and maintain custodial equipment in a safe and effective mannerAssist with seasonal duties such as snow/ice removal, weather-related cleanup, and outdoor maintenance (as applicable)Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulationsMaintain a safe working environment and follow proper procedures for handling cleaning chemicalsFollow all Macon County Schools policies, procedures, and expectationsDemonstrate professionalism, reliability, and attention to detailMaintain positive working relationships with staff and studentsPerform other duties as assigned by school administration or facilities managementKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipmentAbility to safely use cleaning chemicals and follow safety proceduresBasic understanding of building maintenance and repair needsAbility to follow directions and complete tasks independentlyStrong attention to detail and time management skillsAbility to work cooperatively with staff and supervisorsDependability and strong work ethicPhysical Requirements Medium to heavy work classificationAbility to lift up to 50 pounds or more as neededFrequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and reachingAbility to operate cleaning equipment and machineryAbility to work indoors and outdoors in varying conditionsEvaluation Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Macon County Schools evaluation proceduresTerms of Employment Full-time or part-time position (may include evening or second shift)Salary based on Macon County Schools salary scheduleWork calendar determined by the districtBenefits Overview Medical, dental, and optional vision coverage (for eligible employees)Participation in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS)Optional benefits (FSA, disability, life, etc.)Paid leave in accordance with district policyMinimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent preferredPrevious custodial or maintenance experience preferredAbility to meet all Macon County Schools employment requirements
