Fire Modeling Support (Operations Research)
Technical Support For Wildfire Suppression Scheduling This position provides technical support for the testing and validation of mathematical models used in wildfire suppression scheduling. The role focuses on applying Linear Programming (LP) and Integer Programming (IP) to mimic MTT algorithm to predict fire spread and optimize mitigation activities. We are seeking candidates with a deep interest in mathematical theories and formulations to help bridge the gap between operations research and wildfire science. This recruitment is open to external candidates and students from any institution to ensure a broad pool of applicants interested in applied optimization. Full Consideration Date May 10, 2026 Brief Work Unit Description The Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University is a leader in environmental research and land management. This position is housed within the Department of Forest and Rangeland Stewardship, supporting research focused on wildfire behavior modeling and decision-support systems. More information can be found at Colorado State University's website. Essential Job Duties Test and document the performance of Linear Programming and Integer Programming models in various fire spread modeling and fire suppression scenarios. Conduct sensitivity analyses using NIROPS data and predicted ROS on model constraints and objective functions related to wildfire spread. Assist in the translation of operational fire suppression strategies into formal mathematical formulations. Integrate spatial fire behavior data with optimization solvers to evaluate scheduling efficiency. Provide detailed reports on model behavior and suggest refinements to improve predictive accuracy.
