Nutritional Services Specialist

The Nutrition Services Specialist supports the planning, preparation, and service of nutritious meals and snacks for children enrolled in the preschool program. This role ensures meals meet applicable nutrition guidelines while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized environment. The ideal candidate values healthy eating, food safety, and working in a child-centered educational setting. Key Responsibilities Meal Planning & Preparation Planning age-appropriate menus in alignment with program guidelines and nutrition standards Prepare and portion meals and snacks for preschool-aged children Accommodate food allergies, intolerances, and special dietary needs as required Follow standardized recipes and portion sizes Inventory and ordering Food Service Serve meals and snacks in accordance with health and safety regulations Ensure food is prepared, stored, and served at proper temperatures and in a clean environment Maintain accurate meal counts and documentation required Health, Safety & Sanitation Follow all local and state health department regulations and preschool licensing requirements Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen, including dishes, equipment, and food prep areas Properly store food and supplies, rotating inventory as needed Follow handwashing, glove use, and food safety procedures at all times Inventory & Supplies Assist with receiving, organizing, and monitoring food and kitchen supplies Notify administration of low or expired items and unique needs Help minimize food waste through proper planning and storage Collaboration & Professionalism Communicate effectively with teaching staff and administration regarding meals and dietary needs Maintain confidentiality regarding children’s health and dietary information Model professionalism and a positive attitude within the school community Qualifications High school diploma or GED Experience in food preparation, school nutrition, childcare, or commercial kitchens preferred Knowledge of basic food safety practices Ability to follow written and verbal instructions Must be able to pass background checks as required by state licensing Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods Ability to lift up to 40 pounds Ability to perform repetitive kitchen tasks such as bending, reaching, and carrying items Preferred Certifications (or willingness to obtain) Food Handler’s Permit or ServSafe Certification CPR/First Aid (required by program) Work Environment This position works in a preschool kitchen environment and may have limited interaction with children. All staff are expected to support the mission, values, and high standards of the preschool program.
