Sr. Mgr, Mfg Ops

Opportunity summary: As Technical Manager you will be responsible for the laboratory testing (hourly lab group within the mill), Process Safety Management (PSM) program in the mill, ISO program mill wide, and the mill’s paperboard quality system. You will also be responsible for safety, quality, cost/spending/budget/forecasting, capital, and labor relations related to the department. As a Technical Manager you will be accountable for internal and external quality complaint resolution, execution of audits, and ensuring efficient and smooth operations within the production facility. How you will impact Smurfit Westrock Safety · Participate and Promote Safety Excellence and the Safety Committee initiatives. · Manager leader / owner of assigned Safety Excellence System(s). · Monitor/enforces mill and department safety policies. · Ensure all safety incidents are properly investigated and published. · Address all safety concerns for the Technical Department. · Responsible for management, administration and compliance of the Process Safety Management (PSM) program for the mill. · Communicate safety issues, mill and industry wide with all employees. · Perform regular housekeeping audits to ensure a safe work environment. · Encourage and promote employees to participate in safety programs. · Coordinate and ensure all safety compliance programs are completed timely. · Drive to a positive safety culture with employee participation (teams, audits, committees, surveys, etc.). Budget * Responsible for annual department budget which consists of salaries, operating cost, vendor and contractor costs related to the department. * Responsible for accurate monthly forecasting of department budget to production forecast. Production/Mill Reliability * Attend mill morning meetings to provide technical guidance when needed for production and operations. * Achieve business plan objectives by producing or exceeding monthly production goals at the lowest cost. * Provide supervision, guidance, and technical support to the process engineers and serve as the primary liaison with the operating groups on technical issues within the mill. * Serve as the primary lead responsible for the Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) program mill wide. * Work closely with the Engineering Manager in the selection and management of the mill’s cooperative program for Engineering and technical students. * Dotted line supervision to the Rotational Engineers assigned in the mill and act as their mentor and development coach alongside the Engineering Manager and Area Managers. * Work with capital planning to ensure customer needs are met. * Effectively participate in shutdown/outage meetings to support the mill. * Work with the other departments to allow for coordinated outages, etc. * Serve as Lead / Operations Manager on weekend duty call rotation. Quality * Understand his/her role with respect to Smurfit Westrock quality policies and apply these principles daily. * Make sure employees understand the quality objectives and customer needs. * Make sure each employee understands their specific role in controlling quality and follows written SOP’s. * Manage and oversee the ISO program for the mill and maintain compliance. * Support laboratory ISO testing program. * Implementation of recommendations from various diagnostic teams to help improve cost and quality. * Oversee and manage the mill’s documentation program in Compliance Pro. * Serve as primary liaison between the mills and the Customer Service organization with respect to customer needs, complaints, trials, and testing. SOP, People, Organizational Effectiveness * Review IPPE’s with direct reports and their direct reports. * Communicate by e-mail or staff meetings on organizational changes/issues. * Ensure adequate staffing of salary and hourly employees. * Monitor attendance and performance in accordance with the labor contract. * Ensure fair consistent labor practices. * Monitor the training needs of crews, work with training coordinator to accomplish goals. * Monitor overtime spend to lowest level. What you need to succeed: · B.S. in Engineering or related science discipline preferred. · Must have 5 to 10 years of work-related manufacturing experience. · Should have 3 to 5 years’ experience in production supervisory role. · Demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage and inspire others to comply with quality standards. · Thorough knowledge of quality standards and methodologies. · Professional training and quality certifications courses (e.g. Six Sigma, ISO Certification) are preferred.
