Project Engineer / Assistant Project ManagerLocation: Chicago, ILCompensation: $90,000–$110,000About the CompanyA well-established Chicago-based real estate developer and general contractor is looking to add a Project Engineer / Assistant Project Manager to its growing construction team. The company has been operating for more than 30 years and takes a unique, vertically integrated approach that brings development, architecture, engineering, and construction together under one platform.The company has developed and constructed a diverse portfolio of high-quality projects throughout the Chicago market, including multifamily, mixed-use, office, retail, and commercial developments. Its portfolio ranges from smaller multifamily communities to large-scale, high-density urban developments, with a strong focus on thoughtful design, quality construction, and enhancing the communities in which it builds.The construction team is involved early in the project lifecycle, providing preconstruction expertise, constructability input, value engineering, budgeting, and schedule planning before moving projects through construction and closeout. The company emphasizes collaboration, open communication, proactive problem-solving, and maintaining strong relationships with owners, architects, engineers, and trade partners.Key ResponsibilitiesAssist Project Managers with the day-to-day management of commercial construction projects from preconstruction through closeout.Support the development and maintenance of project schedules, budgets, procurement logs, and cost reports.Coordinate with architects, engineers, consultants, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure project requirements are being met.Manage and track RFIs, submittals, change orders, purchase orders, and other project documentation.Assist with subcontractor buyout, scope reviews, contract administration, and procurement.Review plans, specifications, and construction documents to identify potential issues and coordinate solutions.Participate in project meetings and track action items, decisions, and outstanding issues.Assist with value engineering and constructability reviews during preconstruction.Work closely with field leadership to monitor schedule, quality, safety, and overall project progress.Review subcontractor pay applications, invoices, and supporting documentation.Conduct regular jobsite visits and assist with coordinating field activities.Assist with change management and cost control throughout the project.Help coordinate inspections, permitting, testing, and other project requirements.Assist with project closeout, punch lists, warranties, as-builts, and turnover.Build strong working relationships with owners, design teams, subcontractors, and internal project teams.Ideal Candidate2+ years of construction experience in a Project Engineer, Assistant Project Manager, Project Coordinator, or similar role.Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field preferred.Experience working for a general contractor, construction manager, or developer/GC preferred.Strong understanding of construction documents, scheduling, RFIs, submittals, change orders, and project controls.Strong communication and organizational skills.Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.Proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction/project management software.Why Join?$90,000–$110,000 base salaryOpportunity to work for a vertically integrated developer and general contractor.Exposure to the entire project lifecycle, from development and preconstruction through construction and closeout.Diverse portfolio across multifamily, mixed-use, office, retail, and commercial construction.Opportunity to work on high-profile projects throughout Chicago and the surrounding markets.Collaborative environment that brings together professionals across development, architecture, engineering, and construction.
