OverviewOnondaga Community College, located in Syracuse, NY is currently recruiting for a Chemical Stockroom Technical SpecialistThe Chemical Stockroom Technical Specialist is responsible for the full operational management of the Chemistry stockroom and instructional laboratories.This is a senior-level technical position requiring demonstrated experience in chemical stockroom management, hazardous waste compliance, laboratory preparation, chemical inventory systems, equipment maintenance coordination, and safety oversight.The successful candidate must have prior experience managing chemical stockroom or laboratory operations in an academic, industrial, or research environment.ResponsibilitiesPrimary ResponsibilitiesStockroom and Laboratory OperationsOversee all daily operations of the chemical stockroomPrepare stock solutions, unknowns, and reagents to precise specifications (molarity, % w/v, % v/v, etc.)Coordinate laboratory setup and breakdown for multiple concurrent laboratory sectionsVerify equipment functionality prior to instructional useMaintain GHS-compliant labeling and chemical storage practicesEnsure stockroom security and restricted accessAccuracy and reliability are critical. Errors directly impact student safety, regulatory compliance, and academic outcomes.Safety and Regulatory ComplianceMaintain and manage current Safety Data Sheets (SDS)Ensure compliance with EPA, OSHA, and OCC Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan requirementsOversee hazardous waste accumulation, labeling, storage, documentation, and reportingComplete and maintain Hazardous Waste Forms and related regulatory recordsCoordinate with the Chemical Hygiene Officer and Environmental Health and Safety personnelTrain laboratory instructors and stockroom staff in laboratory safety proceduresEnsure safe handling and storage of hazardous chemicals and pressurized gases Stockroom coverage is required whenever wet laboratories are in session. Equipment and InstrumentationCoordinate routine maintenance and service contracts for balances, spectrophotometers, water purification systems, and related laboratory equipmentManage gas cylinder inventory and regulator setupPrepare and maintain analytical instruments, including LC-MS, GC-MS, FT-IR, and HPLC systemsSchedule service technicians and submit maintenance work ordersStaff Supervision and TrainingHire, train, schedule, and supervise part-time stockroom staffAssign duties based on training level and laboratory requirementsProvide ongoing safety training and operational oversight Inventory and Budget SupportMaintain a comprehensive and accurate chemical inventory systemMonitor reagent usage and place timely purchase ordersManage gas cylinder ordering and returns to control rental costsAssist with laboratory supply budgeting and trackingCoordinate proper disposal of surplus chemicals and obsolete equipment Min CompensationUSD $49,984.00/Yr.Max CompensationUSD $49,984.00/Yr.QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or closely related field from an accredited college, university or foreign equivalencyMinimum of three (3) years of experience managing a chemical stockroom or laboratory operations environmentDemonstrated responsibility for hazardous waste handling, regulatory compliance, and required documentationDemonstrated responsibility for maintaining and auditing chemical inventory systemsDemonstrated responsibility for laboratory preparation, scheduling coordination, and equipment oversightExperience supervising or directing technical or student staffDemonstrated ability to maintain organized, efficient, and safety-focused laboratory operations PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSExperience in an academic instructional laboratory environmentExperience with analytical instrumentation (GC-MS, LC-MS, FT-IR, HPLC)Experience implementing or improving laboratory organization and tracking systemsInterest in long-term professional growth within laboratory operationsBilingual in English and Spanish.
