Building Community through Music Community Chorus at South Berwick Part-time Music Director Start Date: January, 2024 Location: South Berwick, Maine Contact: search@ccsb-sing.org Information at: www.ccsb-sing.org/search The Community Chorus at South Berwick (CCSB) seeks a dynamic part-time Music Director to build on a tradition of excellence and to provide a creative vision for the future. The Community Chorus at South Berwick (CCSB) is a non-auditioned choral group, with members from the Maine and New Hampshire seacoast area. Founded in 1975, the chorus enriches community life in the greater Seacoast area with fine choral music and provides the opportunity for singers to expand their musical knowledge and skill preparing and performing challenging repertoire accompanied by area musicians. Currently numbering 60-80 singers, members range in age from young adults to senior citizen and have diverse musical backgrounds. CCSB has a twelve- member volunteer Board of Directors, which is responsible for managing all aspects of chorus operations. Music Director Responsibilities Artistic Management Provides overall artistic direction for the Community Chorus at South Berwick concerts and activities. Plans the music programs and selects performance repertoire that is compelling, challenging, and interesting for singers, as well as enjoyable and exciting for audiences. A program year typically consists of an early December A program year typically consists of concerts in early December and early April. program and a spring program in earlyApril. *This position begins with the 2024 spring program. Works with local instrumentalists to provide additional accompaniment when appropriate, selects soloists, and arranges for supporting singers, often from within the chorus, as needed and as budget allows. Conducts weekly Chorus rehearsals every Monday evening from the first Monday after Labor Day until the December concerts. Rehearsals resume on Monday nights in January until the April concerts. In the event the Music Director must miss a rehearsal, arrange for a suitable replacement to lead the rehearsal. Conductor schedules additional rehearsals for sectionals as needed and appropriate. Works collaboratively with the CCSB accompanist to provide a positive rehearsal environment and an efficient, effective rehearsal. Conducts additional rehearsals during the weeks leading up to each concert, including rehearsal(s) with chorus, instrumentalists, and vocal soloists. Conducts Winter (December) and Spring (April) concerts featuring chorus, instrumentalists, and soloists. Manages music purchasing and coordination of singer packets with library management staff. Board Relations Reports to the Board of Directors. Attends monthly Board of Director meetings as a non-voting member. Attends other committee meetings as necessary. Selects concert repertoire with approval by the music committee or the Board. Selects and confirms performance venues in conjunction with the Board. Public Relations and Communication Provides required written proposals, agendas, rehearsal plans, and other materials in a timely manner. Financial Management Works with the Budget Committee to prepare a budget prior to submitting repertoire options to the full Board of Directors for discussion and approval. Provides regular updates to the Budget Committee to review spending plans and adherence to budget.Qualifications and Expertise Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting or related area. Minimum of five years recent choral conducting experience, performing major choral works with orchestra Extensive knowledge of choral literature and experience conducting both traditional masterpieces and contemporary choral repertoire, including music of historically underrepresented composers and styles. Strong communication skills, able to convey musical ideas clearly to singers of varying abilities Knowledge and use of best practices in vocal production, choral conducting, and adult learning Remuneration: Compensation will be based on our annual budget and the qualifications and experience of the chosen candidate.
