Quality Control Manager

Schuff Steel is seeking an experienced Quality Control Manager to oversee quality assurance and inspection activities for structural steel fabrication and erection projects. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with project specifications, AWS, ICC, AISC, RCSC, and applicable codes while maintaining a strong safety culture. The ideal candidate brings hands-on ironworking experience, a deep understanding of welding and bolting inspections, and proven leadership in field and quality operations.Primary Responsibilities Develop, implement, and manage the Quality Control (QC) Program for steel erection projectsOversee quality compliance for structural steel fabrication, welding, bolting, and installationReview and interpret contract documents, project specifications, shop drawings, and erection drawingsEnsure compliance with AWS, AISC, ICC, and project-specific standardsPerform and/or supervise inspections related to:Welding operationsStructural steel boltingMaterial verification and traceabilityFit-up, erection, and final installationCoordinate NDT activities including Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT)Prepare, review, and maintain inspection reports, NCRs, corrective actions, and QC documentationAct as primary quality liaison with general contractors, inspectors, and engineersSupport field crews with technical guidance while maintaining quality and safety expectationsLead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance workmanship, efficiency, and complianceRequired QualificationsMinimum 8–10 years of experience in structural steel erection and/or fabricationPrior experience as a Journeyman Ironworker with strong field knowledgeDemonstrated experience with quality control, inspections, and complianceAbility to effectively manage quality processes in both field and office environmentsStrong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skillsExcellent communication skills with the ability to work across multiple project teamsProficient in reviewing and interpreting construction design drawings, erector steel drawings, and shop assembly drawings to ensure field installation complies with project specifications, codes, and quality standards.Certifications & TrainingAWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) – RequiredICC Structural Steel Bolting – S1 – RequiredASNT NDT Classroom Training Completion Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) Level I & IIUltrasonic Testing (UT) Level I & II ASNT NDT Certifications Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) Level I & IIUltrasonic Testing (UT) Level I & IIOSHA 30-Hour Safety TrainingEducationHigh School Diploma or EquivalentPreferred ExperienceExperience working with union ironworkers Background in steel erection quality control InspectionsBackground in steel erection quality assurance inspections and testingAbility to mentor field personnel on quality expectations and best practicesKey CompetenciesSafety-first leadership mindsetAttention to detail and documentation accuracyStrong understanding of inspection methods, tools, and proceduresAbility to balance production demands with strict quality complianceProfessional, dependable, and highly organizedWhy Join Our TeamOpportunity to lead quality efforts on complex structural steel projectsCompany culture that values experience, field knowledge, and accountabilityLong-term growth and leadership opportunitiesCompetitive compensation based on experience and certifications
