Landmarks for FamiliesJob DescriptionSummer Academic Tutor - Youth Rise Program (High School, 7 Weeks)Empowering Youth to RisePosition Type: Seasonal / Summer (7 Weeks Total) Program Structure: 1 Week Planning + 6 Weeks Youth ProgramReports To: Program Director or Education CoordinatorPosition Overview:The Summer Tutor plays a critical role in the Youth Rise program by delivering individualized academic support to high school-aged youth involved in the child welfare system. This position is responsible for helping youth rebuild academic confidence, strengthen core skills, and connect learning to future goals.Aligned with Youth Rise's four core pillars-Academic Support, Career Development, Leadership Development, and Life Skills, the tutor will provide engaging, creative, and trauma-informed instruction that supports each youth's individualized learning and growth plan.Program Structure & ResponsibilitiesWeek 1 - Planning & PreparationReview student records, assessments, and individualized learning plans.Conduct or support academic skill assessments (reading, writing, math).Develop differentiated lesson plans aligned with program themes andweekly goals.Collaborate with program staff to integrate academic support into the dailyPrepare materials that connect academic content to career exploration, leadership, and life skills.Weeks 2-7 - Direct Service with YouthDeliver daily academic instruction aligned with needs and goals of youth (literacy, math, structured learning time).Reinforce academic skills through real-world application (career tasks, projects, presentations).Support youth in completing academic projects tied to program themes (wellness, leadership, community engagement).Monitor progress and adjust instruction to ensure growth and engagement.Collaborate with staff to support interdisciplinary learning across all program pillars.Contribute to end-of-program assessments, student presentations, and showcase activities.Key ResponsibilitiesDeliver high-quality, engaging academic instruction for high school youth.Create a safe, supportive, trauma-informed learning environment.Design creative, hands-on learning experiences that build confidence and relevance.Support development and implementation of individualized learning plans.Track and document academic progress and participation.Encourage student ownership, motivation, and goal setting.Build strong, positive relationships that support youth development.QualificationsBachelor's degree in education or a related field (required).Experience working with high school-aged youth.Strong understanding of trauma-informed educational practices.Ability to interpret and implement individualized learning plans.Demonstrated ability to work independently and take initiative (self-starter).Creative, flexible instructional approach.Strong communication and relationship-building skills.Core CompetenciesTrauma-Informed Practice: Understands the impact of trauma and creates emotionally safe learning spaces.Creativity & Engagement: Designs innovative instruction that connects to youth interests and real-life goals.Initiative: Self-starter who takes ownership of planning, instruction, and problem-solving.Adaptability: Adjusts instruction based on student needs and program flow.Student-Centered Focus: Keeps youth growth, confidence, and future success at the center.Pay and Schedule$30/hour.30 hours per week.8:30 - 4:00, Monday - Thursday.7-week commitment (1 week planning + 6 weeks with youth).June 15 - July 31.Candidates are required to complete a criminal background check through the State of South Carolina and Federal Bureau of Investigation; andPass scheduled and/or random drug tests.
